‘Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! is an American franchise, founded by Robert Ripley, which deals in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual that readers might question the claims. Originally a newspaper panel, the Believe It Or Not panel proved popular and was later adapted into a wide variety of formats, including radio, television, comic books, a chain of museums and a book series.’ (Wikipedia)
It was founded on 19 December 1918 and this is the 2021 edition of the book series; clearly proving the continuous popularity thereof. Like its predecessors, this version will astound and amaze adults and children alike. Once again it contains thousands of strange stories, unusual feats and hair raising oddities from around the world. The book is large format, hard cover, printed on glossy paper and boasts with full colour photographs throughout its 255 pages.
Some of my favourites were: amazing sculptures made from noodles; morbid cakes closely resembling human body parts; the world’s largest wind chime; an annual Japanese show featuring the slowest horse races in the world; a seemingly useless invention, namely a finger extender; a massive Tasmanian huntsman spider devouring a dead pygmy possum; a parade of hundreds of witches paddle boarding 10km down the Willamette River; the unicorn puppy (an extra tail grows out of the middle of his forehead); haggis hurling in Scotland; computer keyboard art; Taiwan’s 1000 year old tradition of ‘Burning of the Wang Ye Boats’; a gigantic Ouija board (9000 lb); interesting coffins (including a shoe; a phone box and a wine cork !); a wing transplant on a butterfly and a cat with two multicoloured (one half brown and one half blue) eyes. There is also a spider that lives underwater; a man who rode a lawn mower across Great Britain; a potato (naturally) shaped like a duck and a woman who crushes apples with her biceps.
I took my time with this collection; paging and reading in between daily chores. It is highly entertaining and the perfect gift for fussy readers of all ages.
