Dr. Henry H. Halley was a well-respected author, minister, and Bible lecturer, dedicating his life to spreading his passion for Bible study and memorization. The original "Halley's Bible Handbook" grew from small pamphlets about the Bible that he gave away to encourage churches and individuals in Bible study.
The New International Version of the bible is not my first Bible of choice, though I do have a few copies. But, I love the NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION HALLEY’S STUDY BIBLE.
As a #BibleGatewayPartner, I received a complimentary copy of the New International HALLEY’S STUDY BIBLE in exchange for an honest review but when I started going through the Bible I forgot to write my review! I also forgot that I was not a fan of the NIV Bible translation. (SMH)
I have owned a Halley’s Bible Dictionary for years. Unfortunately someone has borrowed it indefinitely, this Bible makes up for the loss.
I love the charts, the pictures, and the words of Yeshua marked in red. I also appreciate the ribbon that helps me mark a page, though I wish there were at least two. The font is perfect, easy on the eyes, something exclusive to Zondervan. But what I really love is the comments, notes- whatever you want to call them.
HALLEY’S STUDY BIBLE, N.I.V., is what a study Bible should be: a combination of factual data and commentary brought together to help the reader learn.
When HALLEY’S STUDY BIBLE arrived in the mail I was meditating on 1 JOHN 5:14-15
1 John 5:14-15 New International Version (NIV)
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
The comment for these particular verses read as follows:
5:14-15 according to his will. The key to knowing that God hears is to pray this way. This is what I believe and I was glad to see that my understanding was correct.
After that I began using the HALLEY’S STUDY BIBLE for more studies, which is why I forgot to post a review.
There are informational nuggets throughout this Bible which makes it well worth owning. For example: In relation to Psalm 84 there is a nugget entitled: God’s House” I loved the picture of the “Interior of houses with painted walls in Ephesus.” (page 1614 2 John of my Bible) In the book of Revelation you will find a discussion on THE FIRST BEAST- Revelation 13:1-10.
If you are looking for a study Bible for a gift or for yourself this is a good one.
From time to time I give away the Bibles I obtain for review but this one is a keeper!
Henry Hampton Halley was a preacher for a few years, but because of poor health, gave it up. Afterwards, while spending lots of time traveling by train, he used that time to memorize parts of the Bible.
When called upon to preach one time, he found he had forgotten his notes. He felt God led him to recite the parts of the Bible he had memorized, which was a big success with the congregation. He then condensed what he had memorized into a 16-page leaflet, which was the beginning of Halley's Bible Handbook. At God's urging to add more, he continued to memorize and condense the Bible.
Over the years, other things were added, including maps, church history, Biblical facts, along with archaeological discovers about people and events in the Bible. His last printing of this popular book totaled 968 pages. He continued revising it until the age of 90. In 1962, it was given out by The Billy Graham Crusade as a Bible reference to all who came forward.
Today, more than 750 of these items have been put into a new work, The Halley's Study Bible. The text is the New International Version (NIV), done in a 9-point font type. Included are Jesus' words in red letters, study notes, scripture references and hundreds of pictures.
In the forward, his granddaughter says Halley’s passion for writing his handbook, “was to encourage people and churches to read the Bible in order that they might meet and listen to the God of the Bible and come to love his son, Jesus Christ.”
I highly recommend this 5+ star Bible to everyone.

Are you familiar with Halley’s Bible Handbook? Decades ago, when I first became a Christian, this reference book, which is now the most popular Bible handbook of all time, became my go-to reference book whenever I needed to find cultural, historical, or geographical information on topics related to my Bible studies. So, it should come as no surprise that I jumped on the opportunity to review Halley’s Study Bible – the latest NIV Study Bible from Zondervan!
Halley’s Study Bible combines the scriptural insights of Henry Halley – a man who was passionate about spreading biblical literacy through his writing – alongside the popular modern New International Version translation. Inside this Bible you’ll find more than 750 articles, charts and maps from Halley’s Bible Handbook conveniently placed in the spots where you’ll want to refer to them the most.
One of the things that stands out when you use this Bible are the full color maps and photos of archaeological findings and biblical places, which were newly photographed for this Bible. These features help make the text of the Bible come alive. The articles are in blue boxes with maroon highlights that also visually pop against the white pages and black font in the hardcover Bible I received (the words of Jesus are in red).
The Bible uses a 9-font comfort print for the Scriptures and a slightly smaller font for the 6000+ study notes that appear at the bottom of the page.
If you’re looking for a practical Study Bible that will help you to learn more about the historical context of the Bible, then Halley’s Study Bible is a great choice to consider!

As a Bible Gateway Blogger Grid Member (#BibleGatewayPartner) I requested to review Halley’s NIV Study Bible. I received this Bible free as a member but in no way did that hinder my review. The Bible may be purchased through the FaithGateway store at https://store.faithgateway.com/produc...

Overall, I like this Bible and would highly recommend it to anyone serious about Bible study.

I love a Study Bible because it offers a better understanding of not only the Scriptural text, but also the historical context. It’s one thing to read the Bible, but it’s far more important to understand, study, and apply what I learn from photos, maps, articles, and notes. The NIV version is easy to read, the notes are easy to understand, and the additional features are particularly valuable in my journey through the Bible.
I like the structure of the NIV Halley’s Study Bible. Especially the following features:
Sturdy hardcover and colorful slipcover. Crisp, white pages, minimally see-through. Lay-flat design. Comfort print (9pt) is easy on the eyes. Notes included on every page. Small margins, taking advantage of the space. Words of Christ in red. Articles from the Halley’s Handbook shaded blue, making them easy to locate. No shortage of photos, maps, and archeological discoveries. Attached ribbon bookmark.
This Bible does not include a presentation page but makes a thoughtful and meaningful gift.
