Trauma Inc. and Other Works: or, How to Read the World and End It

Rate this book
Welcome to Trauma Inc.: somewhere in North America in the future. A world owned by Conglomerates. People subservient to Corporations. Societies living in Domes. Everyone governed by The Big Men and kept in line by the police and the execution branch.

And Lyle Edwards will find himself up against it all.

But everything here may also be a possible world similar to ours. Or, it may be a utopia masquerading as a dystopia or vice-versa. It is also a homage to H.G. Wells, Franz Kafka, George Orwell and Aldous Huxley.

The other works are "This is the Way the World Ends," "'Tis the Nature of the Beast," and "Break Through the Light"--which have appeared previously on Amazon Kindle.

Just slightly off mark

I like plays. And I like these plotlines. I'm a huge dialogue/characterization person so the lack of setting description is fine.

But I don't think I like radio plays. A bit of stage direction, or more sound direction would really help flesh everything out. Maybe it's my age. Outside of podcasts, radio plays really aren't a thing anymore.

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

Trauma Inc. and Other Works: or, How to Read the World and End It by Sanjay Perera is a work of teleplays. I did not realize it was a work of teleplays. The subject is good just not a fan of reading teleplays.

I have been having a terrible time writing a review for this book. The problem lies not with the book itself but with me. I had not realized (or perhaps forgotten) that the book was a collection of teleplays or stage plays with a central and growing theme. It took me awhile to adjust to reading as plays, with all of the stage directions, and trying to keep that visually in mind while reading. I finally began to achieve that goal halfway through the book. At which point I went back and reread the first part of the book to better mesh those plays with what was coming. My initial rating for this book was 3 stars but I have revised this to 4 stars. Once I began to see these as the plays they are they began to have a much greater impact. The story is one well worth understanding because it very much relates to our times and why we are experiencing so many crisis in the world today. I don't wish to spoil the author's efforts here so I will not reveal what I see to be the direction of the overall story. It is very powerful and on mark for our times. I would very much like to see a presentation of these plays complete which would probably require a limited series approach. Best wishes to Mr. Perera in the future, I look forward to additional works by him.
