Glasshouse

Rate this book

Ada fell from the sky… literally.

Her home was a space station orbiting Earth. For centuries, her people have preserved what was left of mankind following an apocalyptic climate disaster.

Now she is here.

With us.

As we try to navigate our new reality.

With a small group of rebels by our side, Delphine and I are in a desperate race against time to get to the fortified glass island of Washington before the fuel stocks on the station disappear. But where we go from there proves to be an even bigger challenge.

Things are not what they seem and those around us may not be who we think they are.

Will this treacherous journey lead us to the truth or will it lead to our demise?

Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).

Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.

Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.

I received a digital arc in exchange for an honest review. This is simply my opinion on the book and is not influenced by any external factor.

We start Glasshouse right where Greenhouse left off for an action packed start. We meet the same characters along with a few new faces as the story goes on. We’re no longer in Martha’s Vineyard but following the group as they travel to Washington to help Ada save her comrades in the station, and face the post-apocalyptic world the author has introduced us to in the first book.

There is a focus on climate change in this book as well, however, it is not nearly as strong as in the first one. It’s emphasized how catastrophic the great floods were and what humanity had lost because they failed to heed the scientist’s advice. Like in the previous book, it still serves as a reminder that in our present time, climate change is a real concern.

Again, we’re presented with well-developed diverse characters who work together to overcome the obstacles they face. The story is told from Chris’ point of view, and his impulsivity makes him an interesting narrator as he tends to act first and think later.

I’ll also note that Chris really doesn’t have good luck when it comes to horses.

And that ending … loved it! Really makes you want to read more, but I guess I have to wait until book 3 is available to find out what happens. But I just couldn’t believe it…!!

This is a clean read with minimal inappropriate language; however, there are quite a few violent scenes (including one where someone loses a finger), so I would recommend this to older readers. This is a great read for anyone who loves dystopias filled with action, adventure, suspense and betrayal, but don’t mind violent scenes and casualties.

I enjoyed this one a little more than the first. The world and setting and objective were already built in the prior book, and this was a smooth transition to continue where the first ended.

Overall, 4.25/5 (rounded to the nearest full star)

I found this second book was more suspenseful and intriguing than the first. There’s sexual tension, there’s fear, loyalty and above all the fight to survive. Very enjoyable read. The chapters were a tad lengthy but then I’m a Patterson reader and tend to rate all fiction by his rather short chapters.

I cannot wait for the third book concluding the link between the rocket ship people and the stalwart adventurers, Chris, Delphine “the gorgeous brave young deaf girl” and the rest of the crew.

Thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Greenhouse series. Chris and his friends manage to flee Martha’s Vineyard to the mainland only to be caught up in a life and death struggle where no one is quite what they seem.
