This beautiful romantic love story of a Mountain Farmers Girl has left a lasting impression on me. The writing is a warm local style, with many ancient country expressions, now forgotten.
But since I was born in the valley, close to the magic, gigantic and seemingly real and accessible Gate in the Grimming Mountain, I will never forget this book. It is just too long ago that I read it, to write a more comprehensive review, but I have taken it off the shelf to read it again soon.

Geschrieben vor hundert Jahren von einer jungen Autorin mit dem Blick zurück um weitere hundert Jahre auf die damalige Lebenswelt ihrer Familie. Mit eigentümlicher, an der Mundart orientierten Sprache, wird ein lebendiges und vielschichtiges Panorama ausgebreitet. Eine nationale, nostalgisch rückwärts gewandte Zeitgeistströmung der 20er Jahre beeinflusst sicher die Perspektive. Die Ereignisse schreiten langsam voran, Geduld ist gefragt. Ich bin aber bis zum Schluss neugierig geblieben, wie es weitergeht. Von mir kein 5. Stern, da ich zu den von der Autorin mit Sympathie betrachteten Hauptfiguren, zähen Bauernbuben, keinen positiven Zugang gefunden habe.

Who knows, maybe if I write here some of the reasons I love this book so much, then more readers would take a chance on this gem!

The interesting and beautiful setting - rural Austria, the province of Styria, in the early 19th century.

The characters, especially a & b, the husband and wife who raise sons, and a foster daughter.

The interweaving of legends & saints, Catholic and pre-Christian beliefs in wondrous fashion.

This was part of my parents' book collection, and I think it was probably Grandfather's before that. The story comes from Austria, was first written by Paula Grogger in German, later translated into English by Caroline Cunningham, and published by G.P.Putnam's Sons in 1936. It is an old folk tale about people living under a mountain known as the Grimming in what was then the Styrian part of Austria. (507 pages.)
