DeWitt Clinton Peters was a surgeon in the US Army during the 19th Century. He was born on 30 July 1829. He saw service in the Indian Wars, and died 22 Apr 1876.

Prior to the Civil War, DeWitt Clinton Peters was stationed at Ft. Massachusetts, New Mexico Territory and later at Ft. Davis Texas. When Gen. Twiggs turned over US posts under his command to the Confederates, men from Ft. Davis who were loyal to the Union attempted to make their way back North. Their journey was interrupted by the firing upon Ft. Sumter. Peters and the men he was with were taken prisoner at San Antonio, Texas. As an officer, Peters was exchanged and paroled for a Confederate surgeon held at Ft. Warren in Boston, Harbor. He was assigned command of Stuart Mansion Hospital, later called the Jarvis U.S. General Hospital in Baltimore, MD. The Jarvis was a 1500 bed hospital. According to family oral tradition, Peters and his wife Emily were attending Ford’s Theater the night of Lincoln’s assassination. After the Civil War, Peters was assigned as surgeon in charge of the hospital at Fort Union in New Mexico.

He had two sons, Theodore and DeWitt. His namesake became an artist.
