Somewhat amazed to see that in 2017 I am the first person to rate and review this biography of Billy Wright on Goodreads, which was first published fifteen years ago. A true English footballing legend who remains in the top ten of the number of all time caps for the national team, when his nearest contemporary English international is the great Tom Finney, who does not even figure in the top twenty.
Norman Giller has written a fitting tribute that mainly features King Billy's exploits for the three lions. The book could have been more detailed by documenting in greater detail his achievements with the great Wolves teams throughout the 1950's.
Readers should see just what a great era of English football was largely squandered by the system of selectors and the F.A. running the English national teams throughout Wright's time. While todays game is full of so called legends, Billy Wright captained true greats the likes of Mathews, Finney, Carter, Lofthouse, Mortensen, Ramsey, Byrne, Haynes, Taylor, Flowers, Edwards, Greaves and Charlton. While I missed watching Wright, I did see five of the above list, which gives me a good appreciation of the England skipper's standing in the game.
Certainly it is a different game today in a different society, but Wright should be remembered as a hero for all seasons.
