In his early 40s, Dr. Derrick Spell was a successful oncologist—and 80 pounds overweight. He was saving lives every day, and yet, he was facing his own preventable health crisis. He knew he had to make a change. As he began his weight-loss journey, he found that the majority of popular books and articles on diet and exercise were often incomplete and even conflicting at times! He realized that if he—a physician—was having a hard time understanding and utilizing the information out there, it was no wonder why most people failed with long-term weight loss! Dr. Spell set out to find better information, scouring scientific publications and medical databases for evidence-based insights on how to lose weight for good. He discovered a key ingredient missing from conventional health and fitness psychology. When he combined his new knowledge on willpower, vital behaviors, and other mental tools with diet and exercise, the pounds came off quite naturally. In The Bite-Sized Guide to Getting Right-Sized, Dr. Spell shares the secrets to his success, deploying them in “bite-size” chunks for an easy-to-digest health and wellness plan that delivers. With the expertise of a top-notch physician, the compassion of someone who’s been there, and the mental steps necessary for real, permanent results, The Bite-Sized Guide to Getting Right-Sized is the last weight-loss book you’ll ever need.
Dr. Spell is my oncologist. I am not overweight, but I read his book because I have family and friends who struggle with their weight and was curious to know how he successfully lost eighty pounds while so many struggle to lose weight.
What is most helpful is he stresses changing your mindset (he goes a bit into psychology when explaining this.) And when you do that you consciously think about everything you eat so you make better choices. As someone who is at a good body weight I can say this is very true because it’s how I stay at that weight. I think about everything I eat and try to balance my intake all day every day. I limit the “junk” I eat.
He also includes exercise, of course. Move, just move. Get a good pair of sneakers and walk. Just get started.
It’s a slim and compact book and easy to understand and follow along. This is not a fad diet - not Atkins or Keto, etc. It’s all about lifestyle changes. Being diagnosed with breast cancer at 53 (no family history) was a complete shock to me as I’ve otherwise always been healthy and physically active. Dr. Spell assured me it was nothing I did to cause this, but after talking with him I did decide to cut down on processed meats and meats in general.
Easy to read and understand. I keep it with me as a resource guide. By the end of the book I had a much better understanding of the science and psychology of food.
