Fat Dog Farm: Tails of Farm Failures

Fat Dog Farm: Tails of Farm Failures illustrates the many mishaps as Aleah and Andrew navigate city life to farm life. The book showcases the multi-species family and subsequent farm calamities. We all love a good failure, don't we? This is a humorous, inspirational tale of back-to-the-land dreams that encounter some challenging, but ultimately surmountable rough patches of reality.

The tale begins in their urban home in Asheville, North Carolina when Andrew's brother suddenly drops off his dog, a Great Pyrenees mixed breed, named Samosa. As Andrew and Aleah navigate their relationship, life shifts from a downtown city space to acreage, thanks to Samosa. Aleah is the dreamer and optimist; Andrew applies the practical and financial brakes, which are needed often for the farm dream to mature.

The story chronicles their first six years of homesteading in Tryon, North Carolina. What do you get when two suburbanites naively bring several farm species into their lives and hearts? Excitement, sad times, and failures, but a few successes, too. Each chapter relives the many fiascos that incur while living close to the land and caretaking livestock. The journey revealed becomes the muse for Aleah's first book.

The Next Stage

We all go through stages as our lives evolve. This was an interesting story how animals live and direct our lives. My husband once told me when buying a new house, it can’t be dictated by the dogs. I told him everything I do is based on them. So I understand how Aleah made her way to a farm.

Fat dog samosa animal farm

Books about animals are my favourite. And this book lived up to it's name. It's about a farm and the couple moving into a farm and becoming farmers. Their mishaps are hilarious, though you do feel bad for them. There is a succession of animals coming in and going out. And it's always amazing to see how the author gets attached to every animal that comes to the farm. The book reminded me of James Herriot's books, one of my long time favourites. I absolutely think animals know love more than humans do. Looking forward to more books from the author.

If you have been touched by an animal, you will enjoy

Anyone who has had a strong connection with an animal will relate to this book. As will anyone who has taken (or thought about taking) a life changing leap of faith. I appreciated the honesty and humor in recounting their experiences—hog-warts and all— as they truly learn about “you don’t even know what you don’t know” encompassed in the transition from city life to farming. I’m anxiously awaiting the sequel.
