A fun and developmentally valuable story for young readers...

Every child goes through a phase of thumb or finger sucking, in their life. Although not a cause for much concern until they are about six years of age, beyond this age the thumb-sucking habit may cause undesirable defects and facial deformity in the child. Read on to find out how you can intervene early without causing much psychological distress in your child with DANA'S FINGER IS SET FREE by Vered Kaminsky.

This is a very clever interactive book where Dana’s chart is also waiting for you and your child via the link provided, as well as other learning materials in PDF form, to add fun to the reading and understanding of the book. A well-deserved five stars from me.

Learning to break bad habits the fun way

Israeli author Vered Kaminsky is a teacher of Communication and Cinematography as well as an author of children’s books that are both entertaining for young readers as well as easily absorbed lessons about habits and behaviors that may need altering. She is accompanied in this book by illustrator Sara Bat-Or.

Vered sets the tone for her fine story with the following – ‘When Dana was a baby, she had pacifiers in all kinds of colours – yellow, blue, purple, red, and green – and if your searched her very well, you could find a pacifier that changes its colour at night. But Dana did not want any of these pacifiers. Dana only wanted her finger.’ And from that starting point we follow Dana’s progress from infant to kindergarten student – still with her finger in her mouth! Her mother suggests ways – good plans – for Dana to avoid putting her finger in her mouth, but Dana’s bad habit persists until one day she noticed her finger was wrinkled and ugly – a turning point for Dana - and with her mother’s guidance – and new plans - she eventually is able to break her bad habit, and smile, and by first grade she is ‘cured.’

Vered’s mission to inform children and their parents about the dangers and consequences of finger sucking is well accomplished in this interactive story. This is both a fine story and a PLAN! Recommended.

Thumb-sucking in children is associated with the child looking for comfort or calm. This is a story of a smart kindergartener Dana, who finally learns how to stop sucking her thumb now that she is growing older. Dana’s thumb is a constant presence in her mouth and it is making her teeth crooked and also fracturing her nail. Dana notices that because of this habit, her thumb is wrinkled and the nail is cracked. With the help of her mother, she comes up with creative ways to get rid of this habit. The story is simple and easy to understand. Through the experience of Dana, the author appreciates that stopping thumb-sucking as an impulsive behaviour is not an easy task to accomplish but stresses that this is not a good habit. The story is bright, motivating and positive. The endearing and vibrant cartoon illustrations by Sara Bat-Or depict Dana’s experiences perfectly. Thumb sucking is a very common childhood compulsion and author Vered Kaminsky does a superb job in addressing this issue with positivity and compassion.

Good Book For Children Trying to Start Breaking Their Habit

I thought this book was pretty well done for teaching kids a physical method for trying to stop sucking thumbs/fingers. I thought the little girl Dana coming up with the smile idea was good. When the mom hands the chart to Dana, I think by Kindergarten, she’s going to know a chart and a calendar, but other than that, I did think the book was pretty well written with well done illustrations.

From the mom of a finger sucker, I do have to say it is extremely hard to break this habit, and it really does have to come from the children eventually taking ownership and deciding they want to stop. Dana does this in the book.
