Extending the model of Max Ernst's "collage novels" of the 30s into the 70s, this is a cyclic epic told in deftly juxtaposed images, following the continual rising and falling of civilizations as pastoral utopias are consumed by their machines, calcify into empty megastructures, and collapse beneath a new eruption of the natural world awaiting a fresh corruption by idealistic anthropogenic influence. It's more direct than Ernst, certainly, but the greater clarity of general arc allows the individual details of each piece more of framework to play across. This was apparently found on the streets in San Francisco (Satty's stomping grounds, where he followed up this book with a set of collages attempting to capture a disappearing era of SF life), then mailed to us by marvelous friends.
