"Please, Look up at Me"

Rate this book
Kate loves to look at her tablet. Mama feels concerned. Children today seem to prefer looking at screens more than enjoying the outdoors and free play with one another. Every place they go, Kate seems to be looking down at her screen. Even at school, Kate uses a device. At first, Kate feels that Mama is overreacting. But, after some personal reflection and deeper thinking, Kate connects the dots and finds understanding in Mama's plea.

The book describes the daily family struggles of a child hooked on a device and a mother’s plea to stop. As I was reading the book, my mind went immediately to a parent’s lack of discipline for their child, since apparently, she would take the device everywhere and answer with an attitude when the issue was addressed. But, as I kept reading, the author presented the reader with a reality check. A scene in which most of us could sadly relate, a scene where dad ignores daughter at the dinner table because of the use of his personal device.

The book also provides the reader guided questions to start conversations after a Read-Aloud, which makes it an excellent resource not just for parents but for teachers too. There is also a suggested family activity idea to create healthy boundaries with technology.

About a problem many parents are dealing with these days and honestly probably something we should all keep in mind. Our phones are taking up WAY too much of our precious attention! It celebrates the importance of spending quality time with our friends and family and not being glued to our phones all the time. This award winning book has been featured on FOX news and a variety of blogs and couldn’t be more relevant in this day and age.
