Wow, I hadn't realized that my family moved away from New York just before the Son of Sam killings. Actually, I hadn't realized I was alive for them. I'm older than I thought! So this taught me a lot of the details, and also how much interest the killer kept getting for decades after he was jailed.
I had some problems with the text, in that some of the graphics were very forced and the captions for photographs not well thought out. The author kept getting a bit distracted by details and didn't consistently remember whether to write a book about the murders or the murderer, so it felt a bit scattered. There were some good perspectives brought up -- the reporter Breslin's relationship with the case, and what the responsibility of the press was, but without really giving enough information to make a judgment or giving resources to look for more information. The aftermath was also a bit confused, with a glance at conspiracy theories but again I wanted either more from the author, either directly or with places to go. This is explicitly a teaching book, so teach!
The back matter was glitchy, but that is probably because I received an ebook; it has summaries like a timeline and important facts, and then a glossary and index but some of it is obscured in my copy so I can't really evaluate them.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
