Hi, thanks for stopping by. If we haven’t met before, I write fun activity books and action-packed adventures for children. I regularly visit schools, teach creative writing, and run a book club as part of my mission to spark a lifelong love of reading and writing. I’m honoured to have been described by LoveReading4Kids as an “ambassador of children’s literature.”

When I’m not plotting new stories, you’ll probably find me outdoors either dog-walking on the beach, playing with ponies, hiking up hills, or occasionally running (very slowly).

5☆ A Fantastic Creative Writing Workbook I wish was around when I was growing up!

Creative Writing Skills is a fantastic workbook for all children, whether they love learning, enjoy writing stories, enjoy creating stories or just want to try something a little different or Maybe help with English Literature homework then this is the perfect workbook!

It's made up of eight fun chapters,
-
Chapter 1 - Colourful Characters - explores character development and teaches children how to really expand their imagination when thinking about their ideal characters. I certainly learnt alot, it got me thinking about character traits I wouldn't normally of thought of!

Chapter 2 - Delightful Descriptions - Teaches about being descriptive, using your senses when thinking about describing things. Creating a picture. Teaching how to use different ways of describing things and most importantly how to show readers things rather than tell them.

Chapter 3 - Super Settings - Is all about teaching techniques in creating the perfect setting to the story.

Chapter 4 - Perfect Plans - The important bit, planning your stories. All stories start with a beginning, a middle and then an End. This chapter helps to organise plans to make a great story come together. Loved this chapter lots of fun little games to play with friends!

Chapter 5 - Thoughtful Themes - In this chapter children learn all about the Themes to a story. For example what are you hoping your reader learns from your story?
This chapter definitely gave me food for thought it was a very informative and got me thinking.

Chapter 6 - Various Voices - This chapter looks at different ways to tell your story, ie by a narrator or first person.

Chapter 7 - Dynamite Dialogue - Shows various ways you can make your dialogue Fun and Interesting.

Chapter 8 - Story Sparks - Bringing everything in the previous chapters together. Showing children various ways to write stories via lots of different example exercises.

Each Chapter are all easily explained, Fun, very informative, will capture children's imaginations, not too complicated to follow, very cleverly designed activities which children and adults will enjoy.

One thing I would suggest would be to write in pencil as you can rub it out and have endless fun working through the activities again and again.
This book is definitely one that you can use time and time again!

This is perfect for working through it alone or with help and some activities even ask friends and family to get involved, which I LOVED! As it means it's inclusive and encourages communication and social skills too!

One of my favourite activities in the book, which bought back memories was the 'Weird Character' game ( Chapter 1) where you draw a head, body and legs then unfold and see what you get.
So much fun and let's your imagination be a little adventurous!
This workbook definitely bought out the inner child in me! 🙊

I highly recommend this delightful workbook to children aged 8-13, well in fact any age as i learnt so much and I'm 38 lol
I'll definitely be recommending this book to my cousin who is 12 she loves writing stories and being in secondary school this will help with English Literature homework.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This workbook takes the word ‘boring’ out of the equation and is packed with a variety of activities children can easily relate to. Aiming to inspire the creativity of young writers in the making, it is nothing short of engaging even for the most reluctant of novices. Some of the key components covered are character, description, viewpoint, and dialogue with helpful chapter introductions the lead to thinking and creating.

With the right balance of informational bites introduced and the layout of inviting graphics, each chapter is organized with a lesson, and activities to practice.

Creating characters from silly to serious, students are given synonym examples to expand vocabulary and description words while keeping the senses in mind. This same principle is applied throughout the activity book in different sections addressing anything from scenes to settings.

The activities also make use of the student’s senses, allowing places to draw in parts of their stories. Learning to “show” with words rather than “tell” what is happening builds on that principle using the senses. This, I thought, was a great way to lead a young writer into creating more vividly and varied using memory and recall.

There are plenty of pages for practice. Creating scenes, dialogue, poetry, emails, and comics. There is such a variety in bite-sized fun activities, by application, it allows a wide range in change and pace so there is no room to harbor any boredom.
Who wouldn’t want to write about a fluff under their bed?

From building your story: Beginning - Build up - Problem - Solution - Ending to creating more challenging stories with structure and style, the concept of the roller coaster is a fun way to let young writers learn to create arcs and low points in their stories. It also inspires to pay more attention to those details in books the children read or listen too, which will build an understanding and recognition of certain patterns. In turn, the things learned in the activities will become a writer’s tool to be applied.

Filled with many writing prompts and exercises it is a great activity book use at home for extra practice or in a homeschool setting along with other materials. There is always room to expand of course, but as it is, these activities are fantastic and the overall mesh of engaging chapter intros, graphics and prompts are very inviting.
To me, the author’s joy in creating this book and working with children shines through the pages. It is simply lovely and informative, a gentle introduction to creative writing I’d recommend.

I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
All opinions are my own. Thank you!

Visually attractive and engaging workbook for KS2 (ages 7 - 11) with fun and accessible activities.

As an avid reader with a vivid imagination this was the perfect resource to harness my seven-year-old niece’s interest in storytelling and at the same time improve upon her English language skills. Packing in over 70 activities aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils it wasn’t only her alone who throughly enjoyed working through a selection of the topics included as many I completed alongside her! Eye-catching with a range of fonts and cartoonish graphics, every page was different, accessible and relatable for youngsters. Each page is presented in a worksheet format and simply and clearly introduced, with no jargon or dense explanations and the emphasis very firmly on making writing stories fun.

Eight chapters in total cover a range of topics from the basics of character creation with a template (a characters appearance, likes, dislikes, hobbies) and what a character might learn or discover about themselves during a story (trusting others, team work). My niece was fascinated by the activity of choosing better words to convey more accurate descriptions and the Tell/Show task whereby the aim was to describe how a character feels (shy, angry) rather than simply telling the reader. From planning stories with the help of ‘The Mountain’ illustration that is included, the straightforward explanations mean the workbook is suitable for a child working without an adult supervision. Touching on the idea of genres and themes of books, snappy dialogue and finishing up with a host of ‘Story Sparks’ to utilise the skills included in the workbook it really is excellent value for money.

With limited time and resources available within the state sector for capturing a child’s creative spark and improving their confidence in writing it has certainly been an invaluable addition to my niece’s library. So many of the activities are easily adaptable meaning that many of the tasks can be used multiple times once the space in the workbook is filled. In addition to simply providing my niece with a focus for her storytelling imagination the workbook is an excellent foundation for her English education and she has certainly helped to widen her vocabulary and think beyond the catch-all words of ‘nice’ and ‘very’.

As a child I would have devoured this book and it was a pleasure to see my niece so enthused by something educational that doesn’t feel like the chore of homework! I only wish that Lexi Rees would produce a similar book for an adult trying to bridge the gap from the basics and make the transition to a fully-fledged writer! As a 40 year old with aspirations of writing it made a refreshing accessible creative writing guide.

A workbook to develop creative writing in children.

Although Creative Writing Skills: Over 70 fun activities for children: Over 70 fun activities for children is ostensibly aimed at children in the 7-11 age range, it is a fabulous resource for aspiring writers of all ages from 5 -105! As soon as I saw the alliterative chapter titles I knew this was going to be a brilliant book.

I do have one niggle (and I usually do with children’s books) as I would prefer ordinary sentences not to be written entirely in upper case letters because I’d rather model how we expect sentences normally to be written. I completely forgive Lexi Rees this time though, because when she does use sentences entirely in upper case, they are usually pointing budding young writers to a really helpful or important piece of advice and I know children will love the format and variety of font and style.

Indeed, the advice in Creative Writing Skills is superb for all writers. Everything from show, don’t tell, for example, through development of character to the W arc for plotting, are covered through hints and tips that don’t patronise, but rather encourage young writers to improve and develop so that this book is a fabulously helpful resource. There’s space to write and draw, wonderful appealing illustrations and the opportunity to go beyond the realms of the book with website suggestions to visit for further ideas and stimulus.

I think Creative Writing Skills: Over 70 fun activities for children is absolutely brilliant. I adored it. There’s so much to occupy and entertain that I think it would make a wonderful gift for any child – especially one who loves writing, is perhaps housebound or in hospital and unable to do something physical or who simply needs some help in their writing. As for me, I’ve rolled my dice for character, setting and problem and am off to write a story about a monster getting lost in a forest… I suggest you go and buy this fantastic book!

What a plethora of great ideas this book contains to help encourage children to develop their writing skills. It isn't a book to work your way through, rather one to dip in and out of. It covers all the key aspects to help them be authors, giving fun activities to help children develop their characters, setting, planning, descriptions, dialogue and so much more. There are tips galore and lots of ideas to spark stories.

The book is targeted at children in Key Stage Two - i.e. seven to eleven years old, though it could very well appeal to much older budding authors, too. Most activities are for individuals but a few need to be completed with others. The activities are presented in the form of a worksheet and the illustrations definitely add to the appeal of the book to children. The instructions are clear, using a variety of fonts and layouts to add both diversity and interest to their presentation. My only negative is that I really dislike the use of sentences written totally in upper case as this can make it difficult for less confident readers to read independently, but they do highlight key information so I can understand why this formatting might have been used. There is plenty of space provided for children to complete the activities, too and most of these spaces have illustrations, shout-outs or other design features to add to their appeal. I'd suggest doing the activities in pencil so they can be rubbed out and done again and again over the years as the child gets older and, hopefully, wiser!

This is a fantastic resource for teachers, too as the ideas could easily adapt to use with an individual, group or class - definitely well worth checking out! I'd certainly have no hesitation in highly recommending it to parents who are looking for fun ways to help support their child's development of creative writing skills.

I was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after looking through it and being so impressed by it!

A great guide for young writers. Lots of illustrations and helpful hints.

My dyslexic child found it a little busy on some of the pages but also liked the simple but thought provoking text and activities, not all of which need to be written but can be discussed verbally. My child also liked the structure of the activities giving a framework for responses - breaking up the page with prompt questions which was so much clearer to their mind than a blank page or a page with questions just at the top.

My non-dyslexic child enjoyed the questions and prompts. Their initial impression was that they found it a little simplistic but looks can be deceiving. They were pleasantly surprised by the amount of effort (or not) one could choose to put into the activities.

This is a recommended activity book for budding writers or for those struggling with structuring their writing. I will definitely be using many of the activities to help my dyslexic child in structuring their writing. My child is actively excited to use this book the next time they are set a creative writing task at school.

Creative Writing Skills is an activity book geared towards younger kids (ages 7-13, I'd say) that is designed to help them expand their imaginations and write a story/become an author. Each chapter tackles a different "lesson" in writing, such as character development, setting, plotting, and dialogue. There are tips to use when creating your story, as well as fun activities you can do to help stretch your imagination or even use as a group activity with family/friends.

It's a fun activity book that will push creative boundaries and help kids learn to create stories that are magical, fantastical, silly, spooky, and more.

I really liked how the book was split into different chapters that focus on the different sections of writing. I feel that makes it easier for kids to ease into writing.

I also like that the book, even though it's geared for younger kids, can benefit older kids and even adults as well. I know, if I had something like this as a kid, it would have been so beneficial to me (especially because I always had new ideas, but struggled to actually write them out; I still do as an adult, even though I do have one published novella to my name).

I would definitely recommend Creative Writing Skills to parents with creative kids, kids who love making up stories/writing stories, and anyone who may want to learn something new (even if they never go on to write a book).

5 stars from me!

Having previously read Eternal Seas by Lexi, my stepdaughter Belle was very excited to get another book by her, and even more so when she realised it was an activity book. She grabbed a pen to start right away, discarding her usual electronic devices (a feat in itself with kids today!).

From the first few pages she was hooked and learning new things. At 8 some of the words were new to her, which is great because she's learning even more than writing skills.

She completed the first few pages and activities straight away. Obviously it will take some time to work through the whole book, but the inspiration took hold from the start. Belle created a mermaid character called Lexi, which I would say is definitely a compliment to the author!

There's a huge range of activities, tips and things to do. Aimed at ages 7-12 I think younger children will find it challenging but fun to work through with adult support, whilst older children will be able to use it on their own. I'm pretty sure even adults who want to start writing would find it a helpful introduction, avoiding the jargon that many writing books for adults would use. I'm enjoying working through it with Belle myself, it's nice to share my love of writing with her this way.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get creative in a writerly way, whatever age you are!

This book is intended for young children who want to write down the stories they create themselves. I like the simple and playful style in which it is written. This not not the sort of book one should go through in a week or even a month.
There are easy to understand explanations about crafting a story and the required elements.
Remember there must be a beginning, middle and end.
Using a questioning perspective, the author explains how characters are designed and named. She tells why it is important for the author to know more about each character than may go in to the story. What has shaped the way the character sees the world or responds to a situation?
Using games and a team experience of building a character, later a plot, etc. she takes away some of the anxiety in over thinking writing a story. Make it fun and soon it will be done!

This book may sound too simple for advanced readers and writers, but there is value here also for additional age groups.

I love the brightly coloured book cover and have had great fun completing some of the activities alongside Daisy, I found the tasks fun and interactive and we have completed different exercises and shared ideas with each other. The book has great images throughout to help make it fun for younger children whilst the exercises are also relevant for the older age range that this booked is aimed at. It is a really visual book with clear fonts and fab chapter banners, I also liked the space left for the activities to be completed to allow us to really get stuck in.

Creative Writing Skills - over 70 fun activities for children is a great resource for creative writing with kids. It's beautifully presented with attractive illustrations and lots of space for kids to respond to questions and prompts. There are all the sections you would expect from a high quality writing program - Character, Description, Setting, Planning, Themes, Viewpoint and Dialogue. Activities are clearly explained and offered at different levels so it can be used with a wide range of children.

I used a couple of activities with a group of 12 year old middle school kids doing an after school creative writing class. The story prompts on offer here went down really well and activities like the 'show not tell' one were very successful. My group was right on the top end of the age group for this resource and a couple of illustrations were on the young side so I just skipped those ones. I'd love to see a middle school version of this resource, perhaps with less aliens etc and more teen themes of friendship, self-awareness etc - but it is perfectly possible to get this and adapt exercises. It's also worth noting that this is written by a British author. The only thing that I spotted there that really doesn't work for an American audience were a couple of prompts about castles! Not so many castles over here. Old houses and historical places, battlefields etc... yes... castles, not so much!

Overall, I'd happily recommend this. Very accessible, well planned and engaging for kids.

This is a fantastic creative writing book! It has everything the blurb describes and more, aimed at children aged 7-11.

This workbook has a multitude of activities, including, games to play with friends and family, short stories to write, poems, drawings and even comic strips to create. There are eight chapters, each covering a different topic, however they do not need to be followed in order.

I found this workbook to be thoroughly insightful. It would also be a great English Language aid to teachers and parents. The workbook includes everything you would need to consider when writing a story, including character building, use of adjectives and repetitive words, integrating descriptions especially of locations or settings, how to structure a story and if there are any morals to incorporate. It also explores perspectives and dialogues. Each page has a different background which instantly draws you in and each chapter has an author top tip. There is plenty of room to write and draw alongside illustrations that are just itching to be coloured in.

This is a little gem of a workbook and I believe it would be useful for all ages who are interested in becoming an author!

As a primary school teacher this book interested me in so many ways. I find getting children to write stories to be a bit of an uphill struggle, especially boys (I know, not all boys are reluctant to write) so this idea if this book got my attention and wondered if it would help create a classroom of creative writers.
I love the step by step, chapter by chapter layout and incorporated some of the activities into my Literacy lessons.
Well, I have to say I had great success. Most of the children enjoyed doing the activities and didn’t realise they were actually creating a story as they were going along.
We haven’t managed to get through all the chapters yet (we will over the coming weeks), but I can already see the beginnings of some great creative writing pieces. And what’s more the children are having fun whilst doing it, so now when I say “It’s time to continue with our story writing” I no longer get the moans and groans I used to get.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, child or adult, who want to try their hand at creative writing, and definitely to any teachers who have reluctant writers in their class.

After reading and reviewing Eternal Seas earlier this year there was no way that I would pass over an opportunity to learn some tricks of the trade from the lady herself.

This book is a little gem for offering guidance and support to a budding or reluctant writer or even a desperate teacher in need of some new ideas. It’s the sort of book I would have treasured as a child who loved to write but wasn’t always sure how to get the best from my work.

Each chapter has a different focus and contains exercises and templates to work on in order to develop that skill. The skills range from characters, settings, dialogue and many others. I particularly love the sections with free writing prompts. To supplement each activity there are several hints and tips to help your child get the best out of each page.

The pages are all laid out differently to maintain engagement but are clear and concise. What’s even better is that the skills developed are all transferable into a fiction writing.

A fabulous gift idea for any child who loves to write or just needs that little bit of extra encouragement and support..

A fun workbook for young budding writers!

This book covers the main aspects of creative writing and is targeted at primary school/early secondary school children. It is written in a positive and encouraging style with the main aim of helping children create great stories. I think this is key to understand since the rules of spelling and punctuation sometimes hinder a child's creativity and puts them off writing. Although there is a section on “Story Sparks” there is plenty of entertaining inspiration throughout the book. I will enjoy reading what my son creates as a result! He has been dipping in and choosing exercises at random and was delighted to have his copy signed by Lexi.

In summary, the information within is presented well and the workbook has plenty of space for completing exercises. This would make an ideal gift for children and I highly recommend it to all children. Though I must also add, it is also suitable for procrastinating adult writers who can join their children on the exercises!

Aimed at young writers aged from 7+, this workbook not only is full of ideas for starting off writing, but also looks at different aspects of writing and the skills which are needed. It is bright and clearly set out with chapters which focus on characters, descriptions, settings, plans, themes, voices and dialogue, with a final chapter giving story starters where children can put all the skills they have practised into action.

There is a wide spread of subjects which should appeal to children who will be able to find something to spark their imagination. With a page for each task, it has some eye-catching illustrations and is certainly not text heavy. It aims to put some fun and zest into writing and speaks directly to the young writer in clear and unambiguous English.
Thanks to the author for a copy of the book

My four year old is currently learning how to tell a good story at school so I thought this would be an ideal book for him. I am so glad I got it! The book is aimed for children aged between 7 and 12 so there are parts that are a bit advanced for him at the moment but there are others that he will definitely benefit from.

The various fonts and illustrations really drew his attention when I showed him the book. There are tasks and games throughout the book for the reader to try which I know we will have great fun doing together.

There is so much advice in this book! Not only does Lexi explain how to do something, but she has also included 'Author tips' to make the tasks a little easier.

I am so excited to use this with my children. I have recently started writing my own book so I am very interested to see how much I will benefit from it too!

Creative writing Skills.
By @Lexi Rees.

I asked to review this book with the help of my 10 year old grandson who has been using it every night when he comes home from. School.

My review first....

An excellent piece of equipment to enable young adults to improve their writing and understanding of questions asked at school.
It is set out beautifully with bold text and plenty of space to write.
The ideas and questions inside are unusual in places and get the person thinking of different ways to answer.
The cover is fun and draws the eye wanting to explore.

A brilliant and educational book

5 broomsticks.

A piece from my grandson .

This book is ace. I am having a good time filling in the questions. It's not like school, it's more fun. I even took it in to school and showed my teacher who thinks it's a good help for me .

This is a wonderful book, with over 70 fun activities that create an interesting way for your child to build their confidence in creative writing skills without them realising that they are learning.

The chapters take you through the different stages of writing; through creating colourful characters; thinking about how to describe things so that the story shows the reader rather than telling them; planning, dialogues, story sparks and much, much more!

There are some really quirky, fun activities which I thoroughly enjoyed and it certainly had me thinking! This book is aimed at the 7-11 year old range but I think anyone who is thinking about creating a story could learn something from this no matter what age you are - I know I certainly did.

I loved the different aspects of this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I enjoyed reading this activity workbook on creative reading for children of 7 years upwards. The writing style is informal and motivational, using language that will appeal to the book’s target audience. The book is divided into sections, detailing the main areas of creative writing, and there are easy to understand, but engaging tasks to complete within each section.

Although this book is intended for children, it contains good advice that will be useful to any novice creative writer whatever their age.

I read a PDF version of the book, but if the workbook is to be used regularly, a paperback version may be more appropriate.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My 8 year old twins do not like to read. They do love to tell stories and draw. I asked my daughter to read this book with me and do some fun activities. Her immediate response was "No! I don't want to read anything!" I started reading pages and asking her thoughts on how her story would go. She perked up a bit but still no answers, she was listening. Then I got to a page I knew she couldn't resist. She came to the table and was looking and said, "Never mind, I changed my mind, I want to do this." My son chipped in during a break from his video games and really loved the comic book pages.

Excellent book, great and fun activities, even for those reluctant readers. Thank you, you have made this Momma happy!

This is the perfect book for 7-11 year olds who are interested in creative writing - and adults who want to go right back to basics too! The book covers character development, genre, scene descriptions, plot points, dialogue and points of view. Both of my son's have enjoyed taking part in the activities at 5 and 7 years old. (They dictate their stories to me to write in the activity space). It has given us something to do as a family as I love to write as well.
The pages are fun and engaging and pull the children into them, with nice diagrams for the pages throughout. I can safely say we will be working through more of the activities and even redoing some of the ones we have already done as the boys progress through school to see how they change. Definitely worth every penny.

What an absolutely amazing book! My seven year old and myself have been working through the challenges and task of this book for a couple of weeks and, wow! Each section/chapter of the book is broken down into easy manageable chunks which had Lloyd and myself sometimes laughing out loud as his imagination went wild. Lexi has written this book in such clear and easily understandable and helpful section that even my seven year old (who is currently being tested for dyslexia and dyspraxia) could understand it with minimal help from me.

An absolute must for any budding author out there, to enable and boost even the most timid of writers!

When I saw this book I knew it would be something my friend would be excited about (she is a year 3 teacher so has a class of 7 and 8 year olds).

It has to be said, she absolutely loved the book, so what did she say?

"It was really good! There was a brilliant range of activities which could easily be transferred to other units of work. The tasks slowly built up to give the child time to know the characters and know where the story was going before writing and encouraged high level vocabulary."

Sounds like a glowing endorsement to me, if you are a teacher or have kids from primary school age up to pre-teen age then you and they will love this.

Creative Writing Skills by Lexi Rees
This book is an inspirational, fun book for children. As a primary school teacher, I read it with interest and was captivated with the attractive pages and presentation of ‘learning’ which will appeal hugely. Even the chapters are written using alliteration like ‘colourful characters’.
I particularly like the way there are ‘Have a go!’ sections for children to develop using their newly acquired skills and clear unpicking of each learning opportunity, which makes the benefits to improving your writing clear. This book also supports ‘upskilling vocabulary’ which is a common theme in schools atm. My class are thoroughly enjoying using this!

Praise for Lexi Rees!! This activity book is amazing! Me and my step daughter has got so into this. Lexi has inspired my 12 year old to want to write and create little stories as I used to as a child.

This woman's talents holds no ends. We loved the little hints and tips and advice. I especially loved the flow chart at the start of the book - encouraging the reader that they are an author.

This activity book has brought us closer and made us bond even more. So for that, I thank you so much.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 And a whole lot more!!!

A fantastic book. I’m reviewing this as an adult. I’m currently studying at college for my English Language and I am really struggling with my creative writing side.

This book has really helped me , it’s full of writers tips and really fun activities to complete. The A-Z list of words to describe character traits was really insightful, it really opened up my mind to using different words instead of sticking to the same old word.
It covers a wide range of skills to help you write a story from sentence structure to first person narrative.

I shared this book with my daughters aged 7 and 11. It worked well for both ages in different levels. There are so many activities in the book and I found they built per topic. I was therefore able to share slightly different levels with each of my children.

The book is very simple to access. Instructions are clear. Visually it is inviting and there is plenty of space to capture thoughts.

I felt the book struck the balance well between education and fun. My children both enjoyed exploring this book and it was a lovely thing to do together.

As an avid reader, I was wondering if my daughter would like a go at creative writing.
She eagerly got stuck into this book in her own free time, and is really enjoying the activities.
I feel that this will help to improve her English in many areas, without her feeling like she’s really working!
Amazing book, thank you Lexi!
