A unique and heart wrenching account of a hero's experience in the Vietnam War and the painful transition of U.S. Veterans returning home. Written by combat Reconnaissance Platoon Leader 1st Lt. Lee Alley, a true patriot and living legend, the purpose of this book is to aid veterans of any war and their families in regaining a sense of comfort and relief from the nightmarish memories of the tragedies of war. BACK FROM A QUEST FOR LIFE AFTER DEATH is the nonfiction book for which historians and veterans alike have been waiting. For the first time, the physical and emotional problems that returning Veterans of WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq are suffering are discussed openly and with heart-wrenching candor. May God bless all our veterans and may God continue to bless America.
Lee Alley’s “Back from War” details the author’s Vietnam experiences in the Mekong delta, and briefly touches on his post-war return to the University of Wyoming. Alley is truly an American hero.
Mr. Alley has collated a number of narratives from his troops. However, Vietnam had at least four divergent wars. Marines in I Corps fought, for the most part, traditional military campaigns. Alley and his comrades in IV Corps faced VC and NVA attacks. Many USAF airmen were based in Thailand; and, CIA and USAID contractors were involved largely in operations in Saigon and Hue City..
That said, Mr. Alley has done yeoman’s work on a difficult project. He admirably lists resources and information for veterans returning from war, and details the nuances of VA claims. Moreover, Alley highlights the import of reuniting with brothers in arms.
Well worth buying, it's one of those motivational self-help books for combat veterans dealing with what comes next. If you are a veteran, or know someone who is, take a few hours and read this book. I read it every year around my combat anniversary as a form of therapy.
