Charming and picturesque, A Train Journey brings iconic trains to life in three-dimensional pop-ups! In A Train Journey , readers will meet four iconic trains that changed the history of railroad. Each of the four picturesque pop-ups inside depicts a historic train―George Stephenson’s Rocket, one of the earliest steam locomotives; the Elevated Railway in Brooklyn; the Flying Scotsman; and the Japanese bullet train or Shinkansen―in its own environment. Gérard Lo Monaco’s charming illustrations lend spectacular depth and detail to this book that will delight children and train lovers alike. Illustrated in color throughout
"I'm glad we read it. I liked it – the text and the foldouts. Both." T, age 6 A Train Journey was a pleasant surprise. Neither T nor I is particularly interested in trains, but we both enjoyed learning about the history, from the steam-powered locomotive to the bullet train. The text was detailed, yet brief, imparting key facts quickly (top speeds, world-renowned trains, etc.). The foldouts were fun for T, who perused them carefully before we sat across from each other so I could read the info on the back and he could look at the foldout on the front. His favorites were the first two, while I was interested in how horse-drawn carriages were ground transportation below the El Train in New York. Overall, an interesting read with fun foldouts.
Created by the Argentinian illustrator and one of the world’s leading paper engineers, Gérard Lo Monaco, this rather delightful book takes the reader on a journey through the history of trains beginning in 1829 with Stephenson’s Rocket in 1829 and finishing with an experimental French TGV in 2007. Each important stage in the development of train travel is explored in a multi-layered pop-up format full of details. Information about each section and why it was influential can be found on the back pages meaning the visual impact of the 3-D panoramas is uncluttered and the whole book folds out to create a long spread of trains, stations and backdrops. This is quite a small formatted book consisting of only four dioramas but they are all stunning and would delight any train enthusiast.
