Conditional Surrender

Set in the year 1713, Conditional Surrender, adapted from Laurence Sterne's Tristra, Shandy, deals humorously with Captain Shand's naive courtship of the attractive widow next door. Unfortunately, Captain Shand has been wounded in the recent wars, and the widow, who is anything but naive, has her doubts about his desirability as a husband. Much therefore depends upon whether the signs and portents appear to the widow to be favourable for matrimony, and as this is a comedy, so they prove to be.
