Before the Roman occupation Hampshire's first inhabitants were brutish hunters who left little trace of their life or culture. Their successors, the Beaker folk, left much behind, particularly their way of burial. It was the Romans who left the most evidence of their conquest, especially at Winchester and Bitterne.

Since then there has been a lot of change in Hampshire, some good and some bad. The Industrial Revolution, the railways and the shipyards of Southampton and Portsmouth have helped to bring prosperity to the area, and though much has been demolished there is still a wealth of history on view. 103 color and b/w illus.
