This book is a child’s first introduction to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, in a context a young child can understand and enjoy – a birthday party for the world!
Happy Birthday, World: A Rosh Hashanah Celebration was the cutest board book I've ever read. It's a Jewish book about a birthday celebration, but not a regular birthday. This book goes in detail about how a family prepares to celebrate the world's birthday. It's a very short book and I would recommend it for reading to infants to help them understand phonemical awareness. The genres I would put this under is realistic fiction. I added this to my text set because it is something not heard of often, but needs to be shared! This story is very short and sweet, and very interesting to children. It is perfect for infants, and students in Pre-K would find it interesting as well. The words are very interesting and understanding. The characters are of a diverse background, but the students would be able to relate to the characters. It was a very cute four member-ed family, but it was obvious they were not Caucasian (which is how many four member-ed families are portrayed in children's books that I have read). The characters are real, genuine, and simple at the same time; easy to understand. Many of the words used are of the language from the Jewish religion. I love how the children are introduced to a religion that is not very common, and taught some of the language as well.
