Rekindle the Altar Fire: Making a Place for God's Presence

Rate this book
Few believers experience God's altar--a place of pure and wholehearted relationship and worship where our holy God can meet with us and the fire of his presence can fall. But such an altar is necessary in our personal lives, our marriages, our churches, and our nations so that we are strengthened, empowered, and equipped for every good work.

In this influential, modern-day call back to the altar, Chuck D. Pierce and Alemu Beeftu invite readers to find their way to rebuild the place of God's presence to allow the fire of God--his presence and power--to fall. When we rekindle the altar fire, our lives, prayer, and worship are transformed.

The time to rebuild altars for fresh fire is now!

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Chosen Books. All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

How important is an altar fire in the Bible? This book is so intent on the altar fire that one wonders if the authors do not have their own literal replica alters in their homes. This extended metaphor is certainly an interesting one and makes for an interesting book, but there are definitely a few things that the authors have not considered in their subject matter. For one, their intense focus on the home altar and its importance to believers as the effect of arguing for a priesthood of all believers without using the term, by turning ordinary decisions of people into decisions that have the air of priesthood about them. This decision has multiple consequences, in that the author's focus on Bethel and on personal altars fails to mention the sin of Jeroboam in changing holy dates and times as well as putting people into the priesthood who were not Levites, which is similar to the authors' own point of view. Similarly, the authors' focus also resembles that of the Pharisees with their attempt to usurp the prerogative of the priesthood during the time of Christ. Being compared with legendary sinners in Jeroboam and the Pharisees ought to give one a sense of pause.

This book is about 200 pages with fourteen chapters. The authors begin with a discussion of why altars are important (1). This leads to a look at the fire for salvation and revival (2) as well as defining the altar of God (3). After this there is a discussion of how to protect the altar from ruin (4) as well as the building of the altar of worship (5) and overthrowing false altars (6). After that the author talks about making the altar a priority (7), keeping the home fire burning (8), repenting when one has lost one's way (9), and asking God to return the fire to the altar (10). After this comes the authors' attempts to understand God's kingdom (11), rekindle one's prayer fire (12), decree using bold prayers (13), and a final reminder to keep the home fires burning (14) as if one was a priest of one's home altar, which appears to be a main point of the authors.

Even so, this book, for all of its sins of omission in not mentioning key elements of the altar and the priesthood that would cut against the authors' points, is certainly an interesting point. Indeed, the authors' awareness of the history of the sacrificial system is quite extensive and worthwhile as reading material even given the book's shortcomings. And even with the book's omissions, it does make for worthwhile thought provoking material. And that is good enough to get at least some recommendation from me. I liked this book more than this review might seem to indicate, because I think the subject matter is genuinely interesting. Likewise, the authors have a lot to say that is interesting about their own travel to places with heathen ancient altars and their experience with the heathen altars of the contemporary world. These are interesting areas of study, and many of us have traveled both to ancient cities that had holy sites dedicated to false gods as well as places where false gods are worshipped at present, and if one has beliefs that are similar to those of the authors, one is going to want to compare this false worship with genuine biblical worship, so there is some value here in what the authors have to say even if the authors do not make enough clear enough.

In Rekindle the Altar Fire, Chuck D. Pierce and Alemu Beeftu explored the topic of the altar and how we can find our way back to God’s holy altar. They looked at how different people in the Bible and how every new beginning and how they built one. Some of these included, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Samuel, Saul, and much more. In the book, he began by looking at how the Israelites was under oppression and they kept losing their crops to the Midianites. Gideon built an altar and called it; the Lord is peace. God instructed him to remove his father’s idol altar to Baal and built another altar to God. People were upset and demanded Gideon to be put to death eventually there was a battle and they gained freedom from the Midianites. The authors explained they both hoped to see a fire of God spreading to every nation. They shared how God’s people were blessed because of them building an altar and declaring, believing, and building a relationship with God changed their lives. They looked at 8 kinds of fire: Holy Spirit, love of God, God’s word, holiness, worship and prayer, impurity, hell, and ministry. The book will teach readers how to build an altar and a covenant for a deeper relationship with Christ.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is sick of the evil in the world and they are ready to rededicate their lives to God. This book will help readers to build an altar to God and to relight the fire in their hearts for going richer and deeper in their relationship with Christ. I immensely enjoyed the passion of both of the authors and how they were able to get a fresh fire for the love of Christ and how they hope they it will spread to all of the nations of the world. I liked how the book explained how we can dive deeper into our worship and we can reflect His glory and how we can learn to pray for things on earth to be like they are in Heaven.

Pierce and Beeftu begin this book by talking about the importance of altars not just in the Old Testament but also in the New Testament, and for us today. They begin with why we need to build an altar today. While altars were physical in the Bible, they do not have to be physical altars today for Christians. What’s important is the concept behind altars, the worship and offering that is offered to God.

This is a great book for studying the biblical theology of altars and why they matter to us today. However, it was not what I thought he would be about. I realize “altar” is in the title, but I was looking at the subject of the presence of God in the subtitle. Pierce and Beeftu do a good job of biblical theology throughout the book, but I found some of their movements from concept to concept from the text to application. Sometimes, the connections are stretched to their limit.

I recommend this book for those studying biblical theology on the topics presented in the book. But this is not the book for you if you’re looking to study the presence of God in the Bible or for application to your life.

Rekindle the Altar Fire is the first book I have read by either author, Chuck Pierce and Alemu Beeftu, and it is one of the best books I have read recently. Throughout fourteen chapters, the authors teach the history, function, and importance of altars, both physical and spiritual. Some of these themes include Why Build an Altar?, Overthrowing False Altars, Keeping the Altar Fire Burning, and Fresh Fire for Salvation and Revival. I highly recommend this book.

I have received an advanced copy of this book by Chosen all opinions are my own.

A great book that serves as a reminder that we need to prepare our hearts for the Lord. It gives a very comprehensive explanation regarding the altar of the Lord and how it correlates to today's Christian. The altar of our hearts is emphasized, reminding us to make a place for God's presence in our life. I love how it compares today's Christian to the Ephesian church on page 133 to turn back to their first love. Definitely, one to keep in my home library.

Although short this book does emphasize the importance of complete surrender to Christ.

At first I struggled as the OT stories were very well known and nothing new stood out . However where this book became captivating was in the obvious passion of the authors for complete surrender to Christ likeness.

This was both challenging and encouraging. The Altar was if anything overused, when good NT analogy could have done the same job.

It is a book which has prompted me to review my daily walk as a Christian and to lay my life down afresh for Jesus's service.

Challenging and inspiring

There are so many profound truths in this book I had to stop myself from high lighting page after page. The authors lay precept upon precept in an engaging style that somehow simplifies what could be difficult concepts to grasp. They have succeeded in touching a hunger in me that I didn’t have the words to describe. Now I know - I want the fire of God even though it will burn everything. - and I don’t say that lightly. This book is for any Christian who senses there is more but does not know how to access it and any Christian whose passion for prayer and worship has waned but they would dearly love that to be reignited again. I highly recommend this as a potential life changing read.
