Sox & Martin: The Most Famous Team in Drag Racing

Rate this book
As the sport of drag racing exploded in the 1950s, two youngsters from North Carolina each rose through the ranks racing Chevrolets. It didn't take long for one of them to realize that if you couldn't beat him it may be best to join him. Buddy Martin approached Ronnie Sox about campaigning a 1963 Z-11 Chevy; and with that partnership, the most dominant duo in the history of drag racing was formed. Sox & The Most Famous Team in Drag Racing is a comprehensive archival recap of straight-line racing's greatest duo. Historic and modern imagery recapture the celebrated Plymouth race cars campaigned by Ronnie and Buddy throughout their legendary partnership. Also chronicled are the lesser-known Oldsmobile, Ford, Pontiac, Chevrolet, and Mercury mounts predating their time with Chrysler. The races, the cars, the events; all of it is covered here during this golden age of drag racing. Author Jim Schild, with the help of Buddy Martin, Herb McCandless, Jake King, Diane Sox, Dave Christie, and others, has created the most exhaustive, authentic review of the illustrious drag racing career of Sox & Martin. SOX & MARTIN: The Most Famous Team In Drag Racing by Jim Schild and published by CarTech books is just another fine example of this company’s dedication to keeping the history of racing alive. Mr. Schild has gathered together a mountain of research, interviews and revealing photographs in this grand depiction of two guys from humble beginnings who ran the gamut from tyros to the track to kings of victory lane.
Mr. Schild has been around racing, cars and drivers for the vast majority of his live and his history has allowed him access to the inner workings of the Sox and Martin team, thereby allowing for a great depiction of these racers from the Carolinas. The interviews from behind the scenes depict not only the well-oiled machine this duo became, but why it was allowed to happen, as well as depictions of the players behind the scenes.
One of the great things about the CarTech books that I have read is the ability of the authors to stay on topic. A lesser company without the drive needed to maintain focus on a particular topic might have found itself wandering away from the race track and into the personal lives of those involved, the family dramas and heartaches that fall into every life. Sox & Martin provides telling details of the early lives of this pair and some of the ‘away from the track’ details of family life, but it never loses focus on the asphalt, burning tires and Christmas trees inherent to driving through the fifties, sixties and beyond.
The successes are highlighted along with some of the terrible losses that occur to every team, and the cars that were run are detailed in the exacting nature readers hope for but seldom find dramatised in the copious detail provided herein.
SOX & MARTIN by Jim Schild takes pride of place on my racing bookshelf. I highly recommend this book to racing aficionados and those with just a casual interest in the workings of a great partnership alike.
I won this book through Librarything.
