Six friends make the ill-advised decision for an unauthorized rendezvous at a local cemetery well past normal visiting hours. Driven by curiosity and led by their pal, Ray, stubborn in the belief he is right, the men drift deeper into the abyss of the summer solstice night. Eavesdropping on the dead charges a special toll even for the well-intentioned freemason. As lightning flashes in the distant sky, a premonition overcomes some that the night has its own designs. Gravestones mark their progress to the square & compass, but should they have let sleeping dogs lie?
Award-winning author Jamie Dickey was born in the picturesque town of St. Marys, Ontario. His debut novel, Secret Monitor Men, won two Firebird Awards, one for New Adult and one in the Women Sleuth category. His first real job as a paperboy, where he learned how to run a business. In the classroom, Jamie spent a lot of time looking out the window, thinking of 'other things,' yet he glided through school. His imagination even then, wanting to come out & play. In Grade 3, frantic cries from his classmates of a radio report claiming a crashed spaceship in East Coast America only encouraged his imagination. Suffice to say, creative writing was a favorite class. In Grade 5, Jamie wrote a story featuring a Greek girl, whose family were olive farmers. A female exchange student visits them from the West. And no, it wasn't Calli. His first attraction to mystery was the Hardy Boys' series. When forced to read a fun book for a change at school, The Hobbit opened up a whole new frontier. He joined the cross-country team in elementary school because he liked the challenge. At 17, Jamie ventured into resistance training, perhaps a latent influence of the very competitive neighbourhood kids he grew up with.
I fear that I can’t do this book justice in a review but it impressed and delighted me so much that I feel I must try. The characters were likable, relatable and quite more complex then the first chapters led on. In fact, the book itself is more complex in my opinion then your average mystery novel. Biblical, historical, symbolical and, well, mysterious aspects of the plot arise and truly did grip me to the page. The writing is very descriptive and vivid and even now, I can “picture” a few settings and scenes of this fine novel. I think that in itself speaks volumes about the powerful writing skills masterfully crafted by this wonderful author.
This will be a book I reread over time. I like stories that seem to spellbound you somehow, pulling you into the story so to speak, making you feel as if you are there, witnessing the story unfold and the characters develop before your very eyes.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers so will conclude by saying, fo yourself a favor and get a copy of this book. It will take you on an exciting journey, I assure you.
