My thoughts: 📱20% 0:43:06 somewhere in Ch. 2 Kidneys Impacted by Disease - This guy sounds like a robot and some of his words are off. I seriously thought it was a robot with a glitch until I looked at the book information. So far the book is dull but informative. 📱35% 1:16:38 Ch. 4 Renal Metabolic Acidosis - Still in science class, this book does a good job of breaking down information scientifically and translating it into layman's terms, however, it is very boring and I think some of the information was unrelated to the topic of the book. 📱49% 1:46:28 Ch. 6 Mineral Overload - We finally got into the more interesting information.
I can't say I didn't learn anything new because there is a lot of clinical information here, but I don't think I learned any new information about protecting my kidneys and preventing kidney disease. They did a deep dive into how kidneys work, I felt like I was taking college-level Anatomy and Physiology, but when it came to prevention and management it was like the commercial with the sped-up fine print disclosure. They mentioned OTC pain meds, cholesterol, etc. but just gave a brief paragraph on how they are bad for your kidney with little explanation. They literally said high blood pressure and diabetes wreak havoc on your kidneys without mentioning how the conditions and medications associated with them damage your kidneys. Since 50% of people with kidney disease have diabetes I was expecting an entire chapter on how and why. So no new knowledge there. I wasn't crazy about the recipes in general.
Recommend to others?: I'm not sure. If you have kidney disease go for it. If you're studying for A&P maybe. If you're reading for knowledge and future prevention you may be better off with YouTube and Google. I never think medical nonfiction is a complete waste of time, but I was expecting more.
This is a very thorough book set. You get a lesson on what your kidney is, what its function is, what the symptoms are when it's not functioning properly and eventually what it means if you go into kidney failure. I think that's important because it's a very serious condition. You can manage it if you're early diagnosed by controlling your sugar, your cholesterol, your cholesterol, your sodium and phosphorus. It's important to sleep well, exercise and watch your weight. A rich healthy diet of fruits vegetables nuts healthy grains and good fats. In the 1st book you get some recipes. The Renal Diet Cookbook gives you all the recipes you would need, no matter what stage you're at. This is very very helpful and resourceful and I will be using it to help me take care of my family member.
This was a very informational book set to read. Also has many delicious and healthy recipes to try out. Recommended for those who need this special diet.
