The Critical Idiom

This study, first published in 1982, explores and demonstrates the ways in which an awareness of literary genre can illuminate works as diverse as Milton s Lycidas and Berryman s "Sonnets." The first book to offer a historical survey of genre theory, it traces the history from the Greek rhetoricians to such contemporary figures as Frye and Todorov. Particular emphasis is placed on the ways in which comments on genre reflect underlying aesthetic attitudes.

About the author

Heather Paige Dubrow is an American actress and television personality. She is best known as a cast member of the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Orange County, starring in seven seasons since her introduction in 2012. Her acting credits include her portrayal of Lydia DeLucca on the CBS television series That's Life from 2000 through 2002.

کتاب در مورد انواع ادبی و نظرات مربوط به آن است
کتاب را با این هدف از کتابخانه امانت گرفتم که با تعریف ژانر و انواع ادبی بیشتر آشنا شوم و اینکه در ادبیات داستانی چه ژانرهایی داریم و خط و مرز آنها کجاست و چیزهایی از این دست، اما کتاب بیشتر در مورد نظریات قدیمی ژانر (تراژدی، کمدی و...) بود و تمرکزش هم بیشتر بر روی شعر بود. به همین دلیل نتوانستم با کتاب ارتباط خوبی برقرار کنم. شاید بیشتر برای کسانی که به شکل تخصصی‌ ادبیات را دنبال می‌کنند بیشتر مفید باشد.

An excellent introduction to genre, filled with helpful examples and easily comprehensible comparisons and analysis. Chapters 2 (The functions of genre) and 3 (Genre theory I: Aristotle to Arnold) were particularly enlightening. I would recommend this to anyone whose knowledge of literature falls between the Palin family's, and Harold Bloom's.

کتابی با عنوان ژانر، اما ناتوان از بدست دادن تعریفی از ژانر و یا دست کم تعیین و تحدید معنای آن. بنظرم نویسنده هنوز حتا با ژانر جستارهای دائرةالمعارفی و کتاب‌های دانشنامه‌ای آشنا نیست و کتابش ببشتر به مجموعه فیش‌های نامنظمی شبیه بود که از روی دست نظریه‌پردازان این حوزه از ارسطو تا نورتروپ فرای، با شتاب‌زده‌گی رونویسی شده است. ضمن این‌که ترجمه فرزانه طاهری هم مثل بسیاری از ترجمه‌های او در حیطه نظریه و نقد ادبی، نارسا، الکن و گنگ بود. برای نمونه وقتی ترجمه فارسی متداول و پذیرفته شده برای پارودی: نقیضه است، نظیره هجوآمیز چه معنایی دارد؟ ضمن این
که چنین معادلی ابدا معنای پارودی را افاده نمی‌کند.
در کل خواندنش را پیش‌نهاد نمی‌کنم.
