Martese Lawson thought she had the perfect marriage until the day she got the call from a Georgia hospital asking her to come and identify her husband’s body, when he was supposed to be deployed to Afghanistan. When more details surrounding her husband’s death come out, Martese is left wondering if she ever knew her husband at all. With her life in shambles, Martese throws herself into work, taking care of displaced kids as a social worker. On the night where Martese’s problems were about to get the best of her, a little girl by the name of Amaya, is thrusted into her life, until she has to take her to her real guardian, the big-shot lawyer, Preston Miles, Jr. Preston Miles, Jr, Junior Partner of Miles and Langston, was as arrogant as he was a functioning alcoholic. When he wasn’t in the court room, he was throwing back beers and partying. The only thing on his mind was making senior partner and proving that he can take over his dad’s law firm. His life abruptly changes when Martese shows up at his door with a little girl that he had never seen in his life. Not until he was forced into his guardian role, Preston realized what he was truly missing; a family.
Another banger by this author. This is my 3rd read in a row by this new-to-me author and I can say she knows how to write deeply emotional, incredibly dramatic romance with love, tears and a high dose of messiness. In this story, Martese is living her HEA with a career military spouse when her existence is overturned upon his death. Rather than being deployed to Afghanistan as she had thought, he’s actually been just miles away with a secret family. Clearly devastated by this betrayal and struggling to process it, Martese’s social work job has her delivering a newly-orphaned child to party boy lawyer, Preston, who was named in the child’s mothers will as the legal guardian. Sparks fly when the two meet and they must help each other heal from past brokenness.
This book was heartbreakingly raw. You could feel the realness in Martese’s emotions as she processed the loss of her husband in such tragic and dishonorable circumstances. She experiences on-page mental breakdowns and so be mindful of that if that may be triggering. I think all the aspects of the book dealing with the main premise were beautifully-handled.
However, I found the transition of Martese and Preston’s relationship to an intimate one very abrupt and somewhat unrealistic. It didn’t really make sense to me. Furthermore, the resolution at the end and the explanation of Rick’s betrayal just didn’t really add up for me- I found it to be one twist too many for my taste.
Nonetheless, overall, I adored this. This author writes raw, emotional romances that you can’t put down whether or not you like the characters and whether or not you think they’re messy. The characters are real and problematic and eminently human and eminently deserving of love and that’s unique in romance where sometimes it can appear that only perfectly nice characters deserve to be loved. I’m already prepped to read my 4th in a row from her!
What an amazing story of love, resilience, forgiveness and second chances! Martese, was really put in a tough spot, with all the bombshells. My heart ached for her, and the pain she endured. But, how she got herself together in an instant to care for Amaya, showed us her strength. Poor Amaya! That girl is resilience personified! How could she be ok with all she saw and experienced? Loved her! Preston, the hot shot attorney, heavy drinking ladies man. Never quite pinpointed why he was so reckless, but you could feel his misery. These two tore each other down, to build the other right back up! Martese, chewed Preston a new one when he refused to take the responsibility of Amaya. Preston, told Martese she was wrong for putting Anne out, and not wanting Rick Jr. But when those souls tied, and the love and understanding grew, what a beautiful thing! I was teary throughout this entire thing, as I felt so much emotion for these characters. Excellent work! 👍👍👍
Well, this book started really good. Martese's pain was portrayed really well. The author did a great job conveying that. I could feel her pain through these pages. But I wish the author did some research regarding guardianship and the system. The way it happened with Amaya is super unrealistic. Amaya wasn't really portrayed well for a 9 year old. And don't get me started with this whole thing with Anne and Honduras. It was just a bit too far fetched for me. One of my pet peeves is grammatical errors in books and this book was riddled with them. Overall this wasn't a bad book, I just wished the author would've researched, proofread a bit more. I'd read from the author's work again.
This book was so freaking good — omg!!! Endiya Carter truly did her big one with You’re the One, which honestly doesn’t surprise me because she has firmly earned her spot as one of my favorite authors.
This story had me deep in my feelings. My heart really went out to Martese as she struggled through the devastating loss of her husband, Rick, while simultaneously discovering secrets about him that completely shattered the way she understood their relationship. Watching her grapple with grief, betrayal, and confusion was heartbreaking, and I really felt the emotional weight of everything she was going through.
Even though the circumstances were tragic, I loved how Amaya played such an important role in the story. It was amazing to see how this sweet nine-year-old girl not only helped save Martese’s life but also became a catalyst for growth and change in Preston. Her presence brought so much heart to the story.
The dynamic between Martese and Preston was another highlight for me. I loved the enemies-to-lovers energy between them and how their relationship slowly evolved. Watching them go from tension and resistance to realizing they were exactly what the other needed was so satisfying. Their romance felt genuine, healing, and beautifully developed.
The ending gave me all the warm, happy feelings. Seeing them come together and create a loving blended family after everything they had endured was such a rewarding conclusion.
Overall, this was an emotional, heartwarming, and beautifully written story. Endiya Carter continues to impress me with her ability to create characters and relationships that feel real and meaningful. This is definitely one of my top reads so far.
The story was highly emotional about a soldier who died and left his wife with lots of questions and little answers. She met an attorney over a wild and sexy encounter in his apartment with a guardianship issue. They had an already strained and a love hate relationship. That was the case until another event pushed them to work together. In the end, they became more than I expected from the first encounter.
Preston and Martese both finally got what each deserved unconditional love. Preston had to mature and become the man he knew he could be. Martese had to go through the heartbreak of her dead husband's other life. They became one big family from each other's past. Preston past brought Amaya and Martese brought Rick Jr. I love how Preston's family accepted the kids without any discrimination against them.
This is the second book I have read by Ms. Endiya Carter and I enjoyed this one just like I did the first one. She is starting off her career wonderfully. I would definitely recommend it.
This author really can write but she need an editor. Martese and Preston story was very intriguing. Martese just found out about her husband secrets and her life was in shambles until she met Preston. Preston is a new dad and new man after his encounter with Martese and it’s a new feeling for him. A few inconsistencies throughout the book but I loved the story. Finding out the truth was what Martese needed and I’m happy she found it.
FUCK...I'm still emotional, lol. So deep in my feeliiiings, this story had me 😭😭😭💔 I hated Rick with everything in me for what he did to Martese until she found out his truth 😩 biiiiiitch, I CRIED okay. That closet scene took me out. The way she screamed combined with what he was saying and revealing? Bruh, I had to put my Kindle down cause I was hurt 😢😢😢 I heard her pain in my mind 😖. WHY YOU GOTTA DO ME LIKE THAT 🗣️😂. I haven't ugly cried from a book in a while. Damn man. I've loved Endiya's work since her debut novella, His Weekend Special (DEF check it out if you haven't). She's snapping with these stories man. Preston pissed me off at first. He was such a thot LMAO. Like, damn, you dropping dick like that? When Martese showed up and put them bitches out, I screamed "YASSSS, get them hoes out my Maya house" 😂. He wasn't trying to hear shit about being a guardian but I'm glad he read the letter *sighs* Preston fell into his role so effortlessly though ❤️❤️❤️ The patience he showed Martese as she rode this emotional rollercoaster and figured out everything was so beautiful y'all 😩 that's a man baby. Woo. The sex scenes? HONEYYYYY, a bitch got EXCITED 🙊😬 "can I have some pussy?" BITCHHHH *splash waterfalls*. Endiya a freak 😏 a bitch almost grabbed her bull-...never mind. I loved the blossoming of their relationship. Now, Anne? I was surprised at the ho. I wanted to beat her for being a police ass bitch. Rick's mother can suck some balls, okay? Old bitch made me wanna bust her shit lmao. Shorty was a whole type of weird 😂😂😂 TF. Lying on Martese like that in the office, but when Preston figured it out, he was like "AHT AHT". Bomb ass read y'all ❤️💯

This was my first read by this author, but not my last. The book was good from beginning to end. Enjoyed the storyline and these characters. Held my attention and I couldn't put it down. Martese, endured so much after the loss of her husband, Rick. His secrets were being revealed on the day of his death. Enter Amaya and Preston, they both were brought into her life and made for each other. So loved how everything turned out, perfect ending. Great job Endiya Carter
I had so many emotions reading this book. People will go through very bad things in life and none of us can’t say how we would react to an event until we go through it ourselves. I loved the relationship that was built between PP and MM. The growth that was shown between these characters was everything
I enjoyed this book. It was a slow start for me but I definitely wanted to know the story. It's definitely different from what I've read and would keep your attention. Definitely a must read
Martese was a strong woman to go through the things she went through. I wanted to cry for her, but it wasn’t necessary. She had to find herself and she did that on her own. Preston, Lil Rick, and Amaya were and added bonus.
I'm just... Wow. What did I just read? Endiya did you do any research sis?
This story started off so good. My heart broke for Martese and Preston started off as an ass. But then everything just went downhill from there.
The guardianship regarding Amaya was so unrealistic. The situation with Anne and Martese's ex made absolutely no sense. It's like the author thought of scenes but did not do actual research into how things happen. Preston knew the details of Martese's case so how could he have a consultation with Rick's family? Why would Anne sign her parental rights away to Martese?
There was just a lot going on in this book and there was very little explanation for it. There was no need to make Rick a "hero" after we basically hated him for 90% of the book.
I'm just glad this was a novella because I probably would've DNfd it had it not been.

I’m sorry but lil Rick would’ve had to live with Jaunita and Roger. And may I just say Juanita is quite the bitch.
I liked Preston and martese vibe in the beginning. It turned physical unexpectedly. Ultimately I was cool with the Union. I really liked both relationship with Amaya
Story didn’t really go as I imagined but it was an ok read
Welllllll..... this was not what I expected! Was very much so disappointed.
This was not what I expected at all. It actually started out strong, better than what I thought it would be but at around 85% mark it got weird, and then the ending was just “what”; but the epilogue kind of have the HEA closure. The 85% marked in the story is what made me not be able to bring it up to no more than the 3 stars, because come on; she truly didn’t deserve this unyielding, loyal love from PJ because of her devotion and love for Rick. I mean come on, this man didn’t deserve this and he needed his own brand new HEA and not this recycled one. Martese was nice I guess but she lost me there when she went full blown on crying out to Rick who did the whole wrong thing. I must say thought the handling of Anne was priceless as well as Juanita and Roger: you go girl! Preston was sooo bae and the best book hero, boyfriend and man out there. It’s unfortunate that it’s her he wanted and changed for while she was not reciprocating it those feelings at the beginning and throughout the book until the epilogue. This book kind of disappointed me a little since I was so looking forward to this story and these characters specially Martese. In any case I think I finished all of MS. Carter’s books and now I am going to need something while I am waiting for another book to drop. I am going to make sure also that I didn’t miss any books.
After reading the Stolen and Saved by the Billionaire series, I figured out that lawyer Preston had his own book already, so of course I had to check that out. This was an interesting premise (being betrayed with a lie about being deployed overseas) for the story. Never read anything like that yet. The book could have been a little longer to flesh out the story. The second half needed more details and time to feel more believable. The Honduras twist to clean up the betrayal just didn’t fly for me. It seemed way too left field and unnecessary. I hated how the FMC went about her need for healing. There’s no reason she couldn’t get exactly what she needed, but with communication. Especially with Amaya who had some abandonment issues. It also was not realistic that Amaya was just perfectly okay after that horrendous trauma with no kind of mental health treatment. The FMC not suggesting putting her in therapy, even just for the adjustment, was odd given that she’s a social worker. But I have to stop expecting authors to properly handle mental health topics the way I would as a psychologist. Some grammatical and other editing errors were hard to read past. Spice: 2/5 Overall rating: 3.5/5
Men - I don’t know what to say about the ones in this book! My emotions were all over the place throughout this book and I’m reconciling how I felt even now.
I went from wanting to dig up Martese’s dead husband and beat the brakes off of him, wanting to slap Preston for his arrogance at times, men will sure cover for each other, to saying that’s a good man Savannah!
Martese had a very difficult journey after learning of the death of her husband. When I say it took me through it, it really did because I was on that difficult journey with her! When she felt like she was losing her mind I was right there with her! I felt hurt, betrayed, and mad as hell right along with her! I would’ve been right in the passenger seat that night hyping her up - “come on bestie we bout to whoop that trick!” Catching a case too!
Amaya was a sweet heart and Preston was the man. Martese deserved the best and redemption for all of that she went through. This book took me through it, but I enjoyed it!
As a fan of Endiya Carter's latest works, like The Danger Series, I was excited to get into her entire catalog, especially some of her earliest published books. So, when I read the synopsis for You're The One, I was immediately intrigued and I added the book to my TBR quickly.
You're The One is an emotionally charged book with some very heavy themes, especially surrounding grief and forgiveness. The story is there, it's highly engaging and it kept me turning the pages - I finished You're The One in just 2 days. However, the writing isn't the strongest and there are some errors in the book that make reading it a bit of a challenge. That said, if you're a fan of Endiya Carter and you can handle an emotionally charged mature story about redemption, loss, and love, then you'll enjoy You're The One.
This author knows how to write a story that is jawdropping and will have you thinking wtf and this story was no different. There were several times my jaw dropped in disbelief of what I was reading and had me thinking wtf. Martese went through so much and while I don’t think I would have responded the same in some cases, I can’t say for sure but I can say I definitely felt where she was coming from and how she went through her grieving period. I didn’t like Preston initially because he was giving childish f boy behavior but he grew on me once he realized he needed to grow up and embrace his new normal. I loved the way he was with Amaya and the care and tenderness he showed to Martese while she was at her worst. He showed unconditional love and I loved their chemistry together. This book did have several word and grammatical errors but the storyline was so good, I was able to overlook those mistakes for the most part.
This book was well written, funny and definitely kept me turning the pages. I have recently started back reading from this author and I must say that I really loved these last two books I have read. I loved that Martese was not to be played with. I loved how no matter what she was going to stand up for herself. If she probably would have been able to she would have definitely given Rick a run for his money. I loved how she and Preston got together. He is definitely a man's man but had that bad boy party thing still going on. But I loved that he was able to handle business without that getting in the way and how he loved Amelia enough to do a big thing for her. They love shared between Martese and Preston was definitely different from Rick and Amelia but no less needed.
I really enjoyed this book. It had my attention from the very beginning. Very well written, great storyline and character development. They say what's done in the dark will come to light unfortunately Martese had to experience that dark secret while mourning her husband. It really sent her on a downward spiral but with the unexpected visit from Amaya and Preston, her life started to take a turn for better. Preston and Martese were perfect for each other because she helped him change his ways and become the perfect guardian/father figure while Preston helped Martese try and cope with her husband's death. Their journey was an emotional rollercoaster but also gave you hope that these two will end up together and provide the perfect family for Amaya and baby Rick. Beautiful ending to this story.
I’m guessing that’ll be my review title when these books have me in my feelings. Baby, the tears I cried in this book, mainly towards the end had my face soaking. Endiya knows how to write a good, compelling book. I really thought from the synopsis that Preston was an alcoholic, but he wasn’t, although I wonder why he was named junior when he was the second born son.
Martese and the struggle she was going through. To be married for twenty years and to find out things weren’t how you thought and your dead husband had some serious secrets is enough to rock one’s world. All in all it was a great read, I loved our leads and Amaya was a nice addition that helped bring them together.
Martese was devastated by the loss of her husband, but the way she lost him was heartbreaking and caused her great anger. Imagine thinking your husband is 8,000 miles away from Georgia in Afghanistan but is secretly only 30 minutes away from home with his second family. When she was traduced to have to move on in life after finding out her husband of 20 years had been cheating on her for the past 9 years, she meets Preston Miles, Jr., all because of a sweet little girl, Amaya. Their undeniable chemistry ignited once they got to know each other. Preston was a strong, resilient man, and I admired the way he stood by Martese through all her heartache and brokenness, helping her heal.
The ending had me like wait what tf just happened tho because O was going strong with Martese hating Rick! The audacity of Anne tho! I couldn’t have kept my composure at all! I love how Preston just did a complete 180 and changed for Amaya and was there for Martese. My girl was going through😭. And even though it was still fresh, Preston still held his own and was there for her while she grieved her ex husband. Them tapes boy! Thought I was grieving MY husband for a minute😂! I can’t wait to see what Endiya has up her sleeves next! This was bomb! PART 2!?! lol
