On His Watch contains two novellas by two amazing authors. They both tie together. The second one even though it is written by another author continues where the other one left off. I was amazed because the writing was so flawless that one would only think there was just one writer writing both tales.
The first tale, Courage Under Fire by Sharon Dunn, is filled with intrigue from the get-go. A serial killer killed one of their own and now, they're searching for answers. Only when another member of their team is targeted do they get closer to the answers. Except this time, it's even more personal. A dead brother and now, a female new recruit is being targeted. The killer stalks his prey. The captain has to maintain his professionalism while not letting his heart get the better of him. He wants to be there for his new employee under his charge but at the same time, he cannot. Rules be damned. The killer targets the wrong woman and even though he is caught and escapes, they all now know who he is and what he's after.
The second tale, Sworn to Protect by Shirlee McCoy, picks up where the first one left off. The killer is on the loose hoping to get the woman he wants. This time, a new character is on the scene. He is the closest person to the dead officer that the killer went after...and now, he's doing what he can to protect the officer's pregnant wife. He is an officer of the law and will fight to the end. He wants to catch the bad guy more than anyone else. even if that means risking his life. The pregnant wife does not realize it yet because she's still dealing with the loss of her husband and the deadly mouse game with a chaotic killer. But slowly she has fallen in love with her husband's best friend. The ending was perfect. So many twists and turns...I was not sure what the end result would be.
