Note to LOST KEY readers: LOST PALM is a prequel, set about two months before LOST KEY.
An extraordinary prize lies hidden in the remote Florida Keys backcountry.
When Kate Kingsbury finds a map tucked in the pages of a rare Hemingway novel, she sets off to discover a little more about the islands around her new home.
But in an instant, her sunny adventure becomes a dangerous fight for her life.
Can Kate survive the threat lurking among the mangroves?
Chris(tine) Niles has been telling stories since she was a lying kid. Now she’s figuring out how to make a career of it. Because she likes to eat, she tried for about fifteen minutes to write romance. But her characters kept killing each other, so she switched to thrillers.
She lives in northeastern Indiana with her husband, two daughters, and a hungry four-legged sack of fur named Franklin. When she's not writing, she loves to travel around the world, always finding great hiding places for bodies whether she's in the city or the wilderness.
Lost Palm (Shark Key Adventures #0.5) by Chris Niles This is a short prequel that basically introduces the characters and the area. It's a quick adventure that's interesting. Hard to get to involved in a short story.
What a nice short read... And I did get a geographical lesson on the Florida Keys!! I asked my husband's cousin about some of coves, inlets and such mentioned in the story, and yes she corroborated some of what Chris (the writer) had spoke about in this story. Now I definitely must put the Hemmingway house on my "to-do-list" . I wonder tho' just where does Kate fit in? Where's she from? What did she do before arriving in the Keys? I get an inkling feeling she's an ex-cop or agent of some sort. But no background info....And how'd she get what little money she had to get her little piece of "heaven"? All in all however,I did enjoy this story.......P/
Read this audio book as part of a series special from Chirp Audio Books.
This short prequel did answer some of the lingering questions I had when reading the first book in the series, Lost Key. It hinted at some of the missing items that had me frustrated with the logic of that book. Perhaps her previous career as a journalist and the death benefit of her husband's life insurance allowed her to own a somewhat derelict house boat and her above average dive gear. And her occasional 'work' as a dive master may have provided money for her equipment and dog food bill.
As an audio book I was again pleasantly impressed with Kelsey Ann O'Dowd as the female character narrator. Her voices gave distinct characterization to each of the females in the story. The narrator for the male characters, Brian Meslar, seemed to me to be less over-the-top for the male voice he portrayed. This is an improvement over his voicing in Lost Key.
Exceptional short story by Chris Niles. She has taken the characters and demonstrated how to tie them altogether for future books in the series. Chris was able to tie in the history of Hemmingway to current times and leave the reader hanging on to see what happens next. The book is filled with suspense, fun and exciting events that doesn't allow a reader to put it down. As a new reader to Chris Niles, I can't wait for the follow-up books of the series. Lost Palm is certainly a book you don't want to miss out on as it is an exceptional read.
Lost Palm (A Shark Key Adventure Short) by Chris Niles is a prequel to the Shark Key Adventure Series. It takes place near Key West and features the search for an unknown relic of Ernest Hemingway's. It was hidden by his wife Pauline for her children on the day Hemingway left her, the children and his Key West home to be with his next lady. Kate finds a hand drawn map in an old book of Pauline's in a friend's bookstore. The exciting search ensues.
This was an entertaining novella set in the beautiful Keys. The descriptions of the local terrain and the town of Key West are wonderful balances to the cozy mystery story. The story is a fun blend of current day Key West and a historic figure who is associated with Key West, Ernest Hemingway. It is a quick read that is an introduction to a larger series of mysteries that I look forward to reading more about.
A bonus book in the Shark Key Adventures series, this is a great way to get a feel for the series quickly. It was filled with history (of Hemmingway), Florida Keys, dangers on the ocean, and friendships. It was short but packed with excitement and enjoyment for the reader! Pick up a copy if you can find it. I got mine from a BookFunnel sign-up for the author's newsletter, and I'm thrilled I did. Looking forward to more adventures with Kate.
Great story, great characters, and it is based in the Florida Keys. I started my distanced adventure in the tropics when I read my first story by Steven Becker a while ago. This is another great story with rich (not monetarily) characters and history in the keys of Florida. When Kate finds a treasure map, it sends her on an adventure that turns deadly. Chris, thanks for the story and giving me a glimpse of a place I have never been, but definitely want to explore in this lifetime.
An easy to read / listen to story, good characters and a good plot. I received this audiobook for free from the author and wanted to give an honest review.
This was a super quick read that I was able to finish in 2 quick nighttime’s before bed! The writing was great and easy to follow! This short story/novella was super predictable and the brief action that occurred was only one page. It left me with questions. HOWEVER, I will definitely read more of Chris Niles. I received a free copy of this book and later found out it was the novella which introduces the main character of her other books. Because it was so well written, I believe her other books will be much more enjoyable!
A fun short read mixing fiction with true life persons. I love using Hemingway as a "character" and having been to his house in Key West, particularly liked the cat on the divan... bet it had six toes...
