Rolly Waters #4

Ballast Point Breakdown

Rate this book
The fourth novel in the Rolly Waters mystery series.

On a cool winter evening, a speedboat hurtles across San Diego Bay and crashes into the Admiral's Club where a farewell party for the Navy's top-secret Dolphin Divers program is underway. As guests flee the ensuing fire, a woman named Janis Withers crawls from the inferno and screams her last words - Arion has returned!

Guitar-playing private detective Rolly Waters finds himself pulled into the case when he connects Janis to a pair of dog tags left behind by Butch Fleetwood, a member of the Dolphin Divers who disappeared during a training exercise twenty years earlier.

While fending off the FBI and local police, Rolly uncovers tantalizing connections between Fleetwood, a crusading journalist, a celebrity artist, a punk rock singer, a radical animal-rights organization, and the dead woman's own dysfunctional family. As he races against the authorities to uncover Arion's true identity, Rolly's investigation begins to reverberate with his own painful history. His search for the truth leads to him to a ruined casino on a deserted Mexican island where shocking secrets are unleashed in a ruthless showdown between tormented and tormentors.

This is the fourth novel in the Rolly Waters mystery series. It opens in San Diego Bay as a speedboat crashes into the Admirals Club where a secret farewell Navy party is taking place. A woman named Janis Withers crawls through the inferno and screams “Arion has returned” before she dies. Detective Rolly Waters is pulled into the case. He is funny and clever which is seen throughout this suspenseful mystery. This guitar playing investigator probes a friend’s suicide and its connections to punk rock bands, Navy SEALS, a top-secret dolphin training project and the dead woman’s family history. The setting in San Diego adds realism to this intriguing suspense story with many twists and turns along the way. I am now going to read the rest of this series as I was mesmerized by Rolly Waters' character and how he solves crimes. This is a standalone read which is exceptionally well-written.

This is my first Rolly Waters novel and I really enjoyed it. I didn't feel I was disadvantaged by coming in at Book 4 as it was a stand alone story. I was plunged straight in with a very dramatic start, the horrific suicide of a young woman, which sets the scene for the rest of the plot. Rolly Waters is a private detective who moonlights as a musician. When approached to find Butch Fleetwood by a friend of the young woman who has died, he is pulled into uncovering a secret military programme involving a pod of dolphins and some very twisted characters.

Fayman has some great, well developed characters that you meet along the way, each with their own back stories and demons. You never feel time is wasted in this fast paced mystery and yet there is time taken to involve you in the different personalities with warmth and humour which makes this a stand out in the genre.

I do love a good mystery which allows you to unpick what has happened at the same pace as the book, with so many twists and turns that you can not guess ahead and Fayman has created such a book, a real page turner. I shall now enjoy going back and reading the first three books.

Surprisingly Entertaining...

Although this was the first book I read in the series and I don't normally like mysteries that are based mostly on dialogue, I simply loved this book, from the first page to the last.

Rolly is so easy going and down to Earth that I automatically fell in love with his character. He has a lot of boyish charm and there's enough witty banter to keep readers entertained.

Having said that, the story is also true to its nature, providing us with an almost unsolvable crime that we 'witness' from the first row. In fact, that's the first thing we get to 'see', and yet, the more we learn, the less we seem to know about what truly happened.

If this book is anything to go by, then I will definitely be checking out the rest of Corey Lynn Fayman's works. I can only recommend that fans of mysteries and cosy mysteries do the same.

This book begins with a young woman crashing her boat into the Officers' Club during a banquet, and setting herself afire. It only gets better and more exciting as the story progresses. The characters ae strange, but interesting. I have spent much time in San Diego an at the Navy facilities. I have to give an A+ for the accurate descriptions and the ability to capture the feel of the locations in words. The ending has a real twist that ties things together and explains a lot. I have put this book into my "read again" pile because I truly enjoyed it. I was gifted a copy of this book through Amazon.

I had never heard of this series before, and even though this is book 4, I had no trouble diving into this book! Detective Rolly Waters is brought into a case where a woman has died. Although it is deemed a suicide, there is suspicion around her death. I loved the setting of this book - it felt so vivid and real to me. I also really liked Rolly. He was a funny, wry character. I absolutely enjoyed this and would totally read the next one!

Rolly Waters – musician and private detective – is drawn into a case that will force him to come face to face with his past. Along the way his colorful cast of friends, acquaintances and rivals, both help and hinder his progress. Add to the mix a secret military program involving dolphins, an explosion that claims a friend’s life, and a generous helping of sass, the fourth installment of the Rolly Waters series is a pretty fun ride.

If you don’t want any spoilers, skip to the last paragraph!

I was immediately drawn into the book from the first chapter. The opening scene reads like any covert agent action movie or television show, and is just outlandish enough to make you want to know more. As we progress through the book, there are enough twists and turns, red herrings and coincidental connections, that the reader is kept on their toes. Just as long as they don’t think too hard about the activities taking place.

Despite plenty of scenes where the author has the chance to really have tension on display, no one in the book ever seems to be riled or upset after the first chapter. Even staring down the barrel of a gun, Rolly is not more than slightly ruffled – usually ending up more curious than anything. The police are in no particular hurry. Even the bad guy seems to be taking his time.

There are also a number of people in this book who should be charged with crimes, and absolutely no one gets charged with anything. The big bad guy dies in a scene you only hear about in a “two months later” reflection by the main character. Everyone else just gets a pass, despite countless instances of law breaking, including of international law.

All of this is easily overlooked given that the plot, though not groundbreaking, is still entertaining. Right up until the last 10 percent of the book. Once you get to the climax, when the big plot is being revealed and we’re about to learn about everyone’s motivations, the book devolves into cliché after cliché, trope after trope. Everyone’s motivations surround sex, both consensual and non-consensual, money, and of course, revenge. And don’t forget the daddy issues. I really wanted to like this book more, but this ending just stuck in my craw as a cop out.

The writing in this book is great. I found two minor instances of typos, nothing that I wouldn’t find in any book anywhere. The grammar and editing are above what I expected, and the author does an excellent job of delivering back story without beating the reader over the head with it. This is the first Rolly Waters book I’ve read. As the fourth book in a series I was expecting to be missing out on things that had been established in the previous books, but I did not feel left out at all. This can be tricky to pull off without a long-winded exposition, but the author pulled it off quite deftly.

Despite its flaws, it’s still a good, enjoyable story. If you’re looking for a quick, non-challenging piece to occupy your mind on a hot summer day, this is just the ticket. You’re going to get exactly what you expect, and you’ll have a good time.

Guitar-playing private detective Rolly Waters finds himself pulled into the case when he connects Janis to a pair of dog tags left behind by Butch Fleetwood, a member of the Dolphin Divers who disappeared during a training exercise twenty years earlier. This book is more fun than I expected, especially with the secret military program involving dolphins.

The opening scene was fun and action packed. But it didn't ground me into the characters and I kind of felt thrust into a book where I wasn't sure what was going on exactly. I think it needed to slow down a bit to settle the reader. But then no one really reacted in the second chapter, and they just moved along. There are also numerous twists, red herrings and coincidental connections, that I felt was a bit too much and started to pull me out of the story a bit.

But ultimately it was the suspension of disbelief that I was asked to have that ultimately made it hard to get into the book. No one ever felt anxiety or worried. They felt like drones or robots. Even if you are trained, having a gun pointed at you will lead to feelings, maybe not at the moment if you are trained, but later that will catch up. Just look at what American Sniper showed...soldiers were able to control their blood pressure and anxiety out in the field, but when they were home all that spiked.

There were other issues I had with the book. Characters would pop up then disappear, no one had any sense of urgency, law breaking had no consequences. And then the book dissolves into common and overused tropes of sex, revenge, and money. I was hoping for more, especially with the opening scene. But in the end felt disappointed.

The fourth installment to Corey Lynn Fayman’s Rolly Waters mystery series, Ballast Point Breakdown once again finds the axe-wielding (as in ‘guitar’) detective back on the case, diving head-first into the proverbial dark waters surrounding a secret military program.

Book number four opens with a bang (a horrific boat-crash and a dying woman’s final plea) and rarely lets up. The ensuing investigation quickly leads Waters to a trail of murder and deception surrounding a mysterious Dolphin Divers program. From there, Ballast Point Breakdown hits nearly every mark, offering readers captivating dialogue, vivid settings and a clever plot that predictably culminates with an incredibly satisfying twist that will leave you guessing until the very last page.

Measured against the rest of the series (Desert City Diva, Blacks Beach Shuffle, Border Field Blues), Ballast Point Breakdown just might be Fayman’s finest work to date. By now, the author clearly understands his protagonist—Waters not only leaps off the page, but his idiosyncratic way of life is sure to speak to frustrated musicians everywhere. Add to that a gritty, vivid depiction of San Diego and a colorful ensemble of characters, and what you have is genre fiction at its finest.

While Ballast Point Breakdown is sure to please fans of Fayman’s previous work, the novel also provides a perfect opportunity for new readers to jump on board one of the best murder/mystery series going.

This story starts out with a BANG! A very exciting first chapter. Then in the second chapter, the mystery begins. We are introduced to Rolly Waters, private investigator and guitar player. His ties to the music scene provides much of the backdrop for the story, bringing in friends and acquaintances. It soon becomes obvious that the job he is hired to do is going to be anything but easy or straightforward. There is a multi-decade span of time to cover, and many interested parties to be involved. And along the way there are several other serious crimes that occur and bring in both the local police and the FBI.

I found it difficult to keep track of everything that was going on, as I wasn't able to sit and read the book without interruption. People, places, points in time were easy to get mixed up. And then there were the multiple nicknames that some of the characters had, making it sometimes hard to remember who's who. I enjoyed much of the interaction of the characters, but since there were so many versions of stories told and outright lies, too, it was also difficult to keep everything straight. Finally, toward the end when I thought the author was laying out and explaining everything to bring the story to a conclusion, there had to be one more twist thrown in.

So my conclusion is if you enjoy a story with a large cast of characters with many different relationships, and don't mind what seem to be numerous tangents, you will probably enjoy this book.

This is my first Rolly Waters adventure and now I must go download the first 3! This story is about dolphins, murder and tons of action. There are a handful of suspects and each one is a distraction from the real culprit. It opens in the admiral's ballroom where a party with military personnel is underway. A boat comes crashing in and a solitary woman kills herself in front of plenty of people, including her parents. What made her do that? In comes Rolly Waters, musician and private detective. He is approached by Melody, a close friend of Janis, the woman who killed herself. She wants him to investigate. This opens a slew of doors full of mystery and intrigue which involves, of all things, dolphins! I mean, seriously??? I loved it! You won't believe the roads this story takes you down, just when you think you've figured it all out, you haven't! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to the rest!

Jack Reacher watch out! This is such a fun book (I don't mean that it is funny!), but it typies it's murder/mystery/thriller so well. Completely action packed and riveting, it grabs you from the opening page. It starts literally with a fire and an alleged suicide-shooting as a boat crashes into a banquet being held in the harbour, and goes on to have more twists and turns than Dominic Cumming's reasons for travelling to Durham. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but this one is excellent. The characters are unusual and quirky, but that also adds to its charm. It is both formulaic (in the best sense of the word), but also original. As such a refreshing read for detective geeks!

If you are fascinated by dolphins’ apparent ability to communicate with their mates and with humans, you’ll enjoy this twisty tale of dolphins helping society to finally get rid of one evil, mysogynistic deep-sea diver. But you won’t see that coming till Rolly Waters follows leads after a young, dolphin-loving woman torches herself on a boat. Suddenly, not just Rolly, but the FBI are trying to locate one person of interest, but only Rolly is hunting down a diver reported dead over 23 years before. As the plot twists and turns to its dramatic conclusion and you are kept guessing what really happened over a decade ago, you’ll congratulate yourself on finding another great read for such an affordable price!

When I started this I thought I might not be able to fully engage in the story since I am coming in at book 4 in the Rolly Waters series. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The story pulled me in from chapter one. I would have liked the level of tension to have been increased. There were moments when I thought "Oh here it comes. This person is going to go off the rails or something." Rolly is a musician and private detective that's brought into a new case after being approached to help solve a case. The story is entertaining, moves well and one I would recommend to mystery lovers.3.5 rolled to a 4.

Ballast Point Breakdown (Rolly Waters, #4) was the first book in the series that I have read and it won't be the last. This latest novel works as a standalone. The story starts with an explosion and then it takes off and goes nonstop. Rolly Waters is a down to earth character with flaws and baggage but he's smart and cocky and you can't help but like the guy. All the diverse characters have their part to play as do the dolphins and the vivid descriptions of San Diego. Like all good mysteries there are twists and turns, surprises and false clues. And just when you think everything is wrapped up Mr.Fayman throws in a final twist. Well done.

Rolly Waters seeks out Arion's true identity in this thoroughly entertaining murder/mystery. There is fresh dialogue, an intriguing and unique plot, interesting setting, great descriptive passages, quirky characters and a mystery that leaves you guessing until the very end. I've never read any of the previous books in the series, but I believe the author did a good job at making this book strong enough to "stand alone." I would definitely say I liked this book enough to go back and read the other three in the series. Kudos to the author for making this a well-written story!

Great story with lots of twists.

I selected this book because of the San Diego setting, and that worked out very well. It's a lot of fun to recognize many of the locations in the story. However, even without the setting in my town, it was still a great read. The characters were interesting, the humor well done, and the plot was complicated enough to really keep my interest. I'm definitely looking forward to more by this author.

Wonderful read--with fully developed characters and a well-constructed storyline. I had trouble putting it down and lost a bit of sleep while reading this.

I am a sucker for any mystery with a musician as the lead, and at least a partial water setting.

I now need to try to find the earlier Rolly Waters books (as this is #4) to catch up on the series. And I hope Corey Lynn Fayman has ideas for future Rolly Waters books rolling around in his imaginative brain.

Loved this tale of San Diego and its connection with the Navy

Rolly Waters is not like any other private investigator I’ve met in books. He’s more interesting than most. And this story includes an education about music and dolphins as well as an intriguing adventure where Corey keeps the reader guessing about just which characters are telling the truth.

Following Rolly Waters around San Diego as he tangles with Navy researchers and SEALS and trained dolphins makes for an entertaining book. The last few pages where everyone talks instead of shoots was the only draw back. Harmonica Dan and Rolly’s Dad, Captain Waters, are intriguing secondary characters.

incredible becomes believable

You just don’t think it could ever happen until Fayman sends you from place to place showing you how and why. These are such good stories. Rolly balances the good and the bad perfectly with complete acceptance of everything he knows he can’t change. So good!

I always enjoy this writer's style and love following the adventures of Rolly Waters! Fayman paints pictures and characters in such a way that you get the fullness without a lot of bloat. Humor mixed in just enough to bring in the cynicism of a good detective.

An entertaining read (and I loved that it was set in San Diego), but certainly a bit convoluted.

One of my favorite quotes from the book “It was chilly this morning, San Diego chilly, maybe 60 degrees.”
