What an eye-opening book for me. Blackwork is my favorite technique and apparently it used to be call Holbein Embroidery. The name only changed when it became more common to make it in black.
This is an old book, 1976, but most of the projects are appealing. The book is in black and white but there is a full color insert with photos of the projects that are photo depicted and described in the rest of the book.
The instructions for the stitches are almost as good as most of the ones I see in more modern books. However, the instructions for the projects are terrible for this day and age, but pretty good for back then. It includes the fabric, floss and colors used by the embroiderer.
(And here are more of those ubiquitous acorns and vines that I've seen in so many traditional patterns. What is up with the acorns??)
This book is very helpful for me in providing fills for blackwork. What that means is that when you make the outline, you don't use satin stitch to fill it in but patterns. Most of the books I've read that cover blackwork at all don't have that, just the outlines.
I really want a copy of this book. 5 stars taking into account when this was written.
