Sir Alfred Patrick Caldwell-Moore, CBE, Hon FRS, FRAS, known as Patrick Moore, was an English amateur astronomer, who is the most well known English promoter of astronomy. Moore wrote numerous books on the subject, as well as make public, television and radio appearances, over the course of his long life. He is credited as having done more than any other to raise the profile of astronomy among the British general public.
‘An astronomy book for the young which takes them on a journey through the stars and explains the facts behind them. Noted astronomer Patrick Moore was six years old when he began to take an interest in the starry skies. It is his wish that young readers will become interested enough in the sun and the moon and the stars that they will want to make a real hobby out of astronomy. The Starry Sky series is Dr Moore’s way of beginning that process. His clear, easy-to-read texts combine with the realistic paintings of Paul Doherty not only to inform but, more important, to inspire the future astronomer.’ This book was great. I picked this book up purely because its cover caught my eye and I am happy to say I am very glad that I did as I thoroughly enjoyed every single page. Even though this is a small book; almost a pamphlet, and aimed a children, I learned a surprising amount of information from it. As a child, I was interested in astronomy for a while so reading this book was a nostalgic experience for me. As adult reading this book I was able to appreciate the amount of information that was included and how it was presented was aimed at young readers but I actually found this to be a positive aspect of this book as it was easy to read and understand. Dr Patrick Moore has done a great job with this book and the combination of his writings and the stunning imagery by Paul Doherty elevates this little book to a whole new level. I can easily see this book inspiring many young readers. Now that I own this book I am looking forward to re-reading it many times in the future. The Stars by Patrick Moore is well worth the read.
