Man is by nature an epicure, a pursuer of pleasure. We seek it in nature, cuisine, travel, vino, culture and the arts, and with varying degrees of success. Higgins has parlayed his multi-hyphenated life’s experiences as a pilot-photographer-world traveler-oenophile-writer into Exploring Wine Regions—Bordeaux France, a captivating coffee table book on the synergy between the exquisite chateaux, award-winning vineyards, and warm, convivial residents of Bordeaux, that most blessed of wine regions in France.

My delight in this book was exponential. For starters, I immediately took to Higgins’s tone in writing. It is light and candid, almost conversational, and packed with interesting facts and trivia. Such as history: Bordeaux was under British rule from 1152, when Eleanor of Aquitane married Henry II, to 1453. And while British commerce and appetites for Bordeaux wine were significant in shaping Bordeaux’s financial and gustatory future, much of the credit goes to the Romans, who brought vines as far back as 500 BC, and mavericks such as Napoleon III and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who elevated Bordeaux’s wine industry to the standards it is known for today. This book has vastly enhanced my general knowledge and appreciation of wine. For instance, I learned about the all-important terroir and how it fundamentally defines Bordeaux wines. I also discovered the types of wine tastings (horizontal and vertical, to name two) of botrytis, the fungus endearingly called the Noble Rot, which, ironically, results in sweet wines, of the two very different topographies vital to growing almost ninety percent of Bordeaux’s red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Lastly, and with it lies the book’s strongest appeal, Exploring Wine Regions—Bordeaux France is also a discerning travelogue on Bordeaux’s welcoming chateaux--be it medieval or modern, its pocket-sized to sprawling vineyards, recommended restaurants, eclectic museums, charming bed and breakfasts, and the warmth and commitment of the people behind it. His sketches and reviews of each are illustrative, exuberant, and consistently infectious. The same goes for his photography, which absolutely enchants. If anything, this book has calculated a holiday to Bordeaux on my bucket list.

This book is for the budding epicure, especially wine lovers. Whether your tastes veer to the Bacchanalian or moderate, it makes for interesting, heady reading and even more stimulating conversation. But ultimately, this is a guidebook, a roadmap for any one who has felt consumed by wanderlust. Higgins merely articulates what Hans Christian Andersen said best: “To travel is to live.”

“Exploring Wine Regions – Bordeaux France” by Michael C. Higgins has opened my eyes to the beautiful Bordeaux wine region of France. Now my love affair with France has even more to love!

The beauty that Michael C. Higgins brings forth is simply outstanding! Between the writing and the photography, I felt like I’d taken a vacation as I flipped the pages! Both alluring and inviting, a lot of photos took my breathe away! Stunning, Fancy, Warm, Glorious and captivating!

The Buildings, like homes and castles are so appealing they feel like fairy-tales! I am in awe! To me they are magical.

To feel like I was standing at among the vineyards sipping on a glass of wine has been such a gift! Michael C. Higgins is very talented. We need more of these books!

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is a beautifully illustrated guide to the wine region of Bordeaux, France. It contains a history book, a guidebook, and an instruction manual, all together in the form of a coffee book. While I read it in PDF format I can easily imagine how much more beautiful it would be to own a physical copy.

There are three main sections to this book. While the first two sections don’t even cover a tenth of the material, they are not to be skipped! The first small section is a history of the Bordeaux region, including a description of the physical geography that makes this area a world-renowned wine region as well as the history of how and when wine started to be grown here.

Following that is another small section that covers the city of Bordeaux itself. The history of the city, where to go, where to stay, where to eat, and even how to get there.

Last comes the main section of the book, which is divided into the various wine regions that make up the Bordeaux region of France. You will go on a tour of the various wineries in each region, pointing out what stands out at each one. Only places that you can visit are included, so that you don’t drive to a winery that makes exquisite wine, only to be told there is nothing there for tourists!

Not one page goes by that doesn’t have at least one picture on it. The pictures themselves are stunning and in a sense are their own guide to the region. One can practically visit Bordeaux vicariously by flipping through the pages of this book and taking in the sights.

As you read this book and study the photos, I think, that like me, you can't help but wish to visit the Bordeaux region of France, to stop by the various wineries listed, to try and sample and taste and learn. And therein lies the magic of this book. With his words and pictures, Dr. Higgins transports you to a place where it seems all of that is possible. And even if you were only to learn just the smallest amount, you would be wandering through the terrains of France

I recommend this book to those who want to learn more about wine in general, the Bordeaux region of France in particular, or who want a beautiful coffee book as a centerpiece.

The author provides a captivating narrative drawn from personal encounters and journeys through Bordeaux, delving into its wine culture and heritage. Through this book, readers are enlightened on Bordeaux's rich tapestry, encompassing its wines, vineyards, and picturesque estates.

Bordeaux is predominantly renowned for its red wines. The author calls it “The Mini Paris.” Bordeaux is steeped in history and charm. The book highlights the alchemy of Bordeaux wines, attributing their allure to the unique interplay of soil, grapes, and climate. The city pulsates with youthful energy, beckoning travelers to immerse themselves in its vibrant ambiance. Enthralled by the vivid portrayal of Bordeaux, I am enticed to embark on a journey to savor its culinary delights, wines, and architectural marvels, including the allure of dining in a medieval castle.

The prospect of experiencing the tranquility of a private chartreuse adds to the allure of Bordeaux. This literary journey has been an eye-opener, as it unraveled the mystique of Bordeaux, previously unknown to me. Gratitude is extended to the author for sharing these enriching anecdotes.

This insightful narrative serves as a catalyst for pursuing one's passions and embracing life to the fullest. Michael's myriad adventures inspire a thirst for exploration, be it sampling global cuisines or indulging in fine wines.
