I bought this book to learn more about early American logging. I wanted a personal account because the culture and antics of these folks is what I wanted to get right in a novel I was writing. I really enjoyed George Corrigan's experience but it feels very Mr. Rogers. The stories are light hearted and rarely contains conflict of the human nature. Mr. Gorrigan is an honest man who kept his head down and worked hard. It's impressive he survived the harsh conditions of his time but he was a true outdoorsman and not too many books recounting those times exist.
Either way, I think this book is an important park of American history and I'm glad I was able to own a copy.
I can't give these books less of a rating. Not set in the part of Michigan I love, yet it tells a fascinating true story of the lumber industry in this part of the world thru all the aspects. Traces thru his life from a young man beginning work to the time of his involvement with lumber organizations. I learned so much and was never bored. Plan to read again and read aloud to Winston to share with him. Read in 2004.
