The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Tall Tales of American Animals collected and edited by Robert B. Downs (Macmillan Company 1964) (Fiction) (4013).

This is a collection of animal tales by some of America's best known short story writers: James Thurber, E.B. White, Robert Benchley, Mark Twain, and many others.

By far and away my favorite among the sixty or so stories included herein is one whose title I had heard of but had never read: “Pigs Is Pigs” by Ellis Parker Butler. That story is laugh-out-loud funny, and it was the perfect cap to an agreeable and harmless story collection.
