همانطور که خود کتاب هم اذعان دارد، یک دورهٔ فشرده و مقدماتی برای آشنایی با حوزه‌ای بسیار گسترده است. بنابراین طبیعی است که بخش‌هایی از کتاب نامفهوم باشد و یا فهمشان نیاز به دانش قبلی داشته باشد. با این حال، در مجموع کتاب مناسبی برای آشنایی اولیه با مکاتب و حوزه‌های مطالعاتی مختلف زبان‌شناسی است و جامعیت خوبی دربارهٔ موضوعات متنوع دارد‌. سبک و سیاق مطالب هم بسیار منظم و طبقه‌بندی‌شده است که از این نکته بسیار لذت بردم.
ترجمهٔ کتاب در مجموع خوب بود و آشکار است که مترجم دانایی داشته، اما شدیداً نیاز به ویرایش دارد که متأسفانه مغفول مانده است.
