They recruited him to be a hacker. They turned him into an insurgent. The entire planet is obsessed with the REEF—it's the most complete VR gaming experience on the planet. It's not just a place to shop and chat; it's where most life happens. Which is good, because most of the world is TOAST. But even though the rainforests are on fire and some major cities are overcrowded messes of rubble, the Yangtze Corporation has everyone in its spell. Except for MC. A low-level hacker and money-skimmer, MC makes a living by taking the smallest, smallest, smallest pennies from the giant companies operating inside the REEF. That is, until he gets caught. He is whisked away to the other side of the country, where he meets none other than the head of Yangtze and the creator of the REEF, Hideki Natori. What he thinks is a trap to imprison him ends up being an insane opportunity to help save the REEF, before the untraceable bots smashing the virtual world to pieces bring everything crashing down on their heads. A cyberpunk novel worthy of this moment in our digital present.
While this book could definitely benefit from another round of proofreading/editing, it's a pretty decent book. I liked it, and if you like virtual worlds, especially where said worlds clash with the real one, then you won't want to miss this story. It's not exactly ready player one meets snowcrash as the description claims, but it is well into the neuromancer camp. It's a good sotry, and it's a bit funny too in places, but it's an engrossing tale through and through, so if you enjoy virtual worlds, and you enjoy a good yarn, then grab yourself a copy, and settle in for a pleasant distraction.
