Reserves, Electronic Reserves, and Copyright: The Past and the Future

Rate this book
Prepare your library for the changing role of course reserve collections

Reserves, Electronic Reserves, and The Past and the Future provides you with a comprehensive understanding of how the traditional role of reserve collections in education has evolved to reflect changes in technologies, copyright laws, and perhaps more important, perceptions of copyright laws. This unique book demonstrates how librarians have allowed their copyright policies and practices to be shaped by rhetoric from publishers and their own misinterpretations of copyright law instead of the actual legal aspects that apply to course reserves. Author Brice Austin, Head of Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Services at the University of Colorado, presents practical strategies for adapting your reserves to the changing world of higher education, focusing on new teaching methods and electronic resources.

In addition to providing a historical overview of reserves and copyrights, Reserves, Electronic Reserves, and The Past and the Future offers practical methods for getting the copyright flexibility you need from your course reserves by emphasizing economic instead of legal arguments. You'll find strategies for protecting yourself against a decline in the significance of course reserves as libraries and publishers move from print-based to electronic formats. The book encourages you to take a proactive stance on the future of your reserves operation 1) exploiting your position as publishers' customers to your advantage, 2) making full use of Fair Use, and 3) forging partnerships with other campus entities in order to offer expanded, multifaceted reserves services.

Reserves, Electronic Reserves, and The Past and the Future Reserves, Electronic Reserves, and The Past and the Future also contains several appendices, including Section 108 of the United States Copyright Law and Applying Fair Use in the Development of Electronic Reserves Systems from the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The book is an invaluable professional resource for librarians at academic institutions, especially those charged with administering electronic reserves.

Hi there, nice to meet you! Here are a few things about me:

I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, back when it had more of a small-town feel. For a while I was incarcerated at (er, I mean I was a student at) Hillwood High, home of the Hilltoppers (whatever those are).

My father was a professor of Spanish & Portuguese at Vanderbilt University, and was awarded a couple of research grants which allowed us to live in Brazil on two separate occasions, once in Rio de Janeiro, once in Recife.

Later, I graduated from Vanderbilt with a double major in English Lit and Portuguese (yes, I had to take a class or two from my dad, which was awkward, but I would gladly do that again if I could see him now). Later still, I attended the graduate program in Creative Writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder, continuing the trend of receiving degrees from institutions with unusual mascots (Commodores and Buffaloes). I kept that going by earning an M.L.I.S. at Denver University, home of the Pioneers.

These days, I live in Broomfield, Colorado with my wife, two of my kids, and Rory, an outstanding Holland Lop rabbit.

If you have the time and interest, I hope you’ll visit my website at www.briceaustin.com, where you’ll find more information about my books, plus a couple of downloadable stories. Have a great day!
