Read: 1/6/25
Setting: Regency England
Trope: class difference, kidnapping, second chances

Plot: Katie has been forced to steal and gamble her whole life thanks to her irresponsible father who owes dangerous people money. It's this reason she risks everything to cheat the infamous Earl of Brynston out of £ 40,000. Unfortunately, she runs into the Earl the next day with his brother, the man she cheated out of £15,000 last week. 😲.

The jig is up! Brynston will teach this rich American heiress (her fake identity) a lesson she won't forget! He kidnaps her, takes her to a flash house, and sends a ransom note to her father. He'll return her when he gets his money back. Hopefully, all this will teach her a lesson! Yes, this Earl really does this moronic deed!

Clever Katie is able to escape and make it home. It's time for the family to move on to France. Unfortunately, Katie is kidnapped AGAIN! This time on the docks. Then her carriage is held up by her father's loan brokers (The Turks). Brynston is able to shoot them and escape with Katie. Quickly, Katie claims she is being blackmailed and that's why she had gambled and cheated. Overcome with guilt, Brynston declares that they will marry. Being a fraudster, Katie was obviously not in favor of that idea. He literally has her tied and gagged with a priest agreeing it was all legal. So basically, he went medieval on her a**

So now Katie is stuck for the time being. Her proud father has no problem with the con and her sort of uncle keeps threatening to kill her husband. The worst part is that she's falling in love with her grumpy husband and his crazy family. Still, she tries her best to keep her distance. Their marriage is not legal and she must move on soon if she's going to pay her father's debt. Then his siblings set them up and the pair are forced to spend the night together. 🥵

Katie doesn't want to abandon Brynston, his wonderful family, and their peaceful life. She wants a real home full of love! But, will Bynston forgive her when he finally learns the truth about her or will he be disgusted?

Conclusion: Brynston kidnapping the h twice, and then marrying her was crazy! This is definitely a "just go with it" kind of book. Still, I liked it. It was just an average old school romance. Nothing special though
