An amazing story from cover to cover! Right away, King pulls you into a beautiful, fantasy world full of conflict, emotion, heartbreak, love, joy, and laughter. It's easy to become attached to Rory, our protagonist, and wondering what happens to her and her friends will keep you turning pages!

From the first page, Kathleen King pulls you into a magical world that is real and tangible, where dragons and dwarves rub shoulders with giants and talking weasels. The action moves to Alaska, but it both is and isn't like our real world. Secrets are woven into birthday gifts, and a mystery surrounds the origins of the teenage protagonist. When an airplane crash flips Rory into woods she doesn't recognize, she and her new friends, guided by the mysterious, all-knowing Firebird, realize they're the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy. But danger is as ever-present as a shadow, and no one is safe.
Perfect for fans of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, this YA fantasy explores faith and doubt in the face of loss, beginning with the death of Rory's mother in Alaska. The teenage characters grapple with relationships with their families (parents and siblings), yearning for independence while craving connection. The discovery of love and complicated feelings for someone else provide a good bit of emotional angst for Rory, who must eventually decide whether she wants to step into her assigned role in a world she doesn't recognize.
Throughout, Kathleen King presents a vivid magical world, and her greatest strength is in her invention of unforgettable creatures, both wonderful and terrifying. The shadow of loss--both in Alaska and in the magical world--gives the book a real emotional weight. But all the questions aren't answered in this book, and readers will be left eagerly awaiting book 2!

Lord of the Rings meets the Chronicles of Narnia for YA fantasy fans. Kathy is an awesome person and I'm so impressed by her creativity on constructing this fun story!
