Rescued: Adventures with Down and Out Dogs

Rate this book
A must-read for all dog lovers, this heartwarming memoir celebrates the enduring bond between dogs and humans and ultimately poses the question, who rescued whom?
Can you imagine loving and caring for a dog you knew you couldn't keep? Could you give that dog up to be adopted? And would you be willing to do it over and over again?
That's exactly what Jenni Williams had to do as a volunteer foster carer for her local animal shelter. In the space of eighteen months she fostered fifteen dogs including an abused beagle, a litter of seven puppies and an extremely fearful husky mix who was considered virtually unadoptable.
A lifelong dog lover who'd never had one before, Williams discovered she had a natural affinity for caring for down and out canines. And just as this deeply rewarding and transformative journey changed the lives of her foster dogs, it irrevocably changed hers too.

I don’t usually read memoirs, but this one was recommended to me, and being a dog lover, I couldn’t refuse. I found myself laughing at things like Hank’s sneaky attempts to avoid being on crate rest (for some reason, it reminded me of my own pets’ aversion to being in a carrier). I also found myself tearing up at the mistreatment some of the dogs faced before coming into Jenni’s care, and also at the wrenching moments when she had to let her beloved fosters go to their forever homes.
This book is written in a fresh and engaging style, and it has been well-edited. It provides a wonderful insight into the world of fostering dogs. More than that, it captures just how special the bond between human and dog can be. Recommended for all animal lovers!

Beautiful honest and inspiring

The sheer honesty of Jenni's words as she describes the familys trails, hopes and feelings mean I couldn't give this less than 5 stars (in fact I would give it 10/5)
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs and also to anyone who loves dogs and would be willing to foster.

Jenni Williams found herself classified as a “dependent wife of an alien” when, in 2010, her RAF husband, Steve, moved them from England to the U.S. as part of an eighteen-month military exchange. Their new, temporary home was Fort Detrick in Maryland. Jenni’s status prevented her from working a regular job, but being an animal lover, she was able to work as a volunteer at the no-kill shelter run by Frederick County Animal Control. Having wanted a dog all of her life, she quickly signed up for the dog-fostering program at the shelter, and ultimately ended up volunteering everywhere from the kennel runs to the spay & neuter clinic.

Williams has a natural ability to understand the canine mind. She is the ultimate dog whisperer. Her instincts about training and canine communication are right up there with the best of the professional trainers, and are actually several notches above some of the “celebrity” million-dollar trainers. Her deep respect for the ancient dog-human bond is a running theme throughout this book. As you read, I promise you’ll end up wanting Jenni for a best friend and wondering whether her patient and kind husband could be cloned.

"Rescued" was an absolute delight from start to finish. Williams’ writing is clear and flows beautifully. She’s introspective, honest, and doesn’t gloss over her feelings, openly sharing difficult situations both in her personal life and dog-fostering "career." All the ups and downs are presented with a sharp, self-depreciating sense of humor and are often combined with the wisdom of retrospect.

A wonderful side trip, so to speak, in this book is Williams sharing her love of the natural world through vivid, crisp descriptions of wilderness hikes and vacations in some of America’s top, outdoor destinations.

I urge you to read this book. It’s uplifting and warm. A must-read for dog lovers everywhere.

Last year we finally got to know the right people, to help us transition into fostering rather than ending up adopting most of the animals we rescue while on mission here in the Balkans 😅 This meant that in 2020 we saw seven dogs we had cared for move into loving new homes, in Switzerland and the UK, and it is the reason why we didn't hesitate to bring home Foxy and her two puppies on new year’s eve, as I described in the previous post ... #janicke73

I therefore also find it fitting, that the only(!) _paper_ book I managed to finish last year, was this one, by Jenni Williams - who is a friend of an English friend that gifted me a signed copy 💞 In it she recounts her experiences with fostering and volunteering at a shelter, while her husband is stationed abroad - ring a bell? 🙃

The author does this in a way I only wish I'd be able to describe some of my own experiences! That is with great detail, humility and humor. It was really nice to learn new things from her as well as reinforce some of my own thoughts on dog care and training🤓

Last but not least, I really appreciate that an explicit wish to encourage fostering is expressed, and I of course couldn't agree more - where I was, with my four rescue dogs (and a few cats 😸) next to me 🥰
