I’m just going to review this for now because I can’t settle on a rating at the moment. I may update this at a later time if I think about it more.
Okay. So. There were a lot of things that I both liked and disliked about this book. Let’s start with the things that I liked.
The characters. I had issues with Parker, which I will talk about when I get to my dislike section, however I did like how protective he was over Madeline. Overall, I also liked Madeline quite a bit. She came off younger than 24, but it was said that she was quite sheltered so that made sense & I adored her enthusiasm over things like her new apartment and car. But the side characters really won me over, especially Christine. I also liked Mark, and I understand why they weren’t in the book too much, but I enjoyed every moment that they were.
There’s a decent amount of sex scenes in this book, especially considering the rather short length, and they were well done. My personal favourite was the mutual masturbation scene, partially because I’ve just never read that in a book before, but also because I thought it was written really well and it brought out a different side of Parker.
Alright, I need to mention my dislikes now. I’m going to try keep this as spoiler free as possible, but potential spoiler warning if you are wanting to go into this book not knowing much at all. Since the description of the book says secrets between them are revealed, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that I think Parker’s secret was unforgivable, whereas Madeline’s were literally for legal reasons. The fact that SHE apologized to HIM and they agreed that they were both wrong infuriated me. While I do appreciate that Parker did have feelings for Madeline, I don’t think he deserved Madeline’s forgiveness, especially so quickly.
My other issue was that there were a couple inconsistencies, especially considering this book was re-titled and re-edited, so I’m just surprised that they weren’t caught during editing. The first is in Chapter 1 when Madeline is told she will be going to the University of Nebraska & Detective Reynolds (Mark), calls it his alma mater. But then later in the book, Parker is telling Madeline about himself and said that he went to the University of Wisconsin with Mark and they both got their degrees there. Also in Chapter 1, Madeline says that her mom died suddenly when she was 3 years old, but then later on tells Parker a story about when she went to the zoo with her mom when she was 5. Neither of these details actually mattered to the story, but inconsistencies like that just personally drive me a bit crazy.
This ended up being longer than I expected. I think there’s going to be a lot of people who feel differently about Parker than I did, and will love this book. And by no means did I dislike this book, I just had a hard time getting over his actions but that’s completely a personal opinion.
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book and my opinions are honest!
This was a great read! Even though there was danger + violence, I thought that ultimately this was a love story. Parker & Madeline were made for each other. They soothed each other. I would recommend this book
