I read the self-help book The Ultimate Self-Esteem Workbook for Teens by Megan MacCutcheon. I enjoyed this book because it was interactive and thorough with definitions and helpful examples. I was able to really study into myself, how my mind works as a teen, finding ways to alter my mindset in a positive way. I saw and felt personal growth while completing this self-help book, and was able to better understand myself by the end of the text. This was generally my main goal when picking this out.
Megan MacCutcheon’s self-help book outlined several ways to combat low self-esteem, giving descriptions of the different symptoms and effects that come with low self-esteem problems. MacCutcheon incorporated real-life scenarios and examples to further explain the topic. These examples help readers understand how to cope in healthy ways rather than resorting to harmful habits and self-medicating. Self-harm, eating disorders, isolation, drug, and alcohol abuse are all harmful to one’s self. Instead, MacCutcheon suggests, in her writing, better ways to cope. Using her questionnaires and activities to monitor your progress throughout the pages, encourages these healthy coping habits. With these interactive pages, you can see your personal growth from the start to the finish of the workbook.
What exactly causes low self-esteem? Low-self esteem has many contributing factors, including traumatic past experiences and events, lifestyle, habits, mindset, and mental health disorders. So many things in your life can play a role in low self-esteem. Being able to pinpoint these factors is important in building self-esteem and counteracting negativity. MacCutcheon shares a patient's story where a friend trying to help but gives the wrong advice. This advice led the patient to try self-harm to cope with her low self-esteem, instead of using a healthier coping method. Encouraging seeking help from a school counselor or another trusted adult is the better option when helping a friend. Pinpointing sources that contribute to these actions is vital in figuring out what is actually going wrong and how to help yourself or a friend in this situation.
It may be surprising but with so many contributing factors there are also many preventative techniques to use to improve low self-esteem. Surrounding yourself with supportive peers, keeping a consistent schedule, and talking to someone that can help you are just some ways to help or cope. Finding patterns in your behavior and self-studying are important preventative techniques as well. These techniques can help combat low self-esteem feelings and situations you encounter daily. Finding healthy ways to cope such as exercise or physical activity are both healthy ways to build self-esteem. Ultimately healthy and safe coping strategies are what you are trying to find through this process of self-improvement.
This self-help and improvement book is great for anyone struggling with self-esteem, confidence, or fitting in. The Ultimate Self-Esteem Workbook for Teens is very enlightening, explaining that you are not alone and there are ways to help with low self-esteem. I would recommend this workbook to anyone interested in self-improvement in the teenage and young adult age range. The author Megan MacCutcheon is comforting and descriptive with the topic and provides you with many resources to study yourself with. This workbook is informative for many and is a fairly easy read. Although I do wish there were more long-term strategies given in the book, I would rate this book a 9/10, the book is very helpful and an excellent resource to use when learning more about yourself as a person.

Highly recommend this book for teens AND adults!

Such a great read! Especially for those who have inner childhood wounds to heal. It’s simple and the exercises are so good. I really wish I had access to something like this for myself as a teenager.

I read this book for my child & family skills class, but I really, really enjoyed it! I think this could be very valuable for teens (and honestly even adults) to work on building self-esteem and increasing self-compassion :)

I received this book as an arc from Netgalley. While this book is specifically tailored towards teenagers, I definitely think that anyone suffering from low self-esteem should read it. Even if you don’t think you have low self-esteem, I think most people would benefit from reading this book and doing the exercises. I’m not a teenager but I found it very enlightening and informative. There were a lot of very helpful exercises and coping techniques that I found very helpful. Teenagers go through a lot and it’s a hard time of life where you’re trying to figure out who you are. This book can really help in coping with this. I thought it was well written and thought out.

Finally a workbook for teens that addresses self-esteem in an easy to follow, thoughtful way.. I like the way this book asks open questions and encourages teens to answer them honestly and in a way that helps them feel good about themselves while at the same time accepting the reality of life today. The text itself encourages young people to be themselves and most importantly to accept themselves as they are no matter what they have to face. This book shows teens how to celebrate what is great about themselves and even the things that don't seem as great just may be better then they think. A must for all teens.

This workbook with over 50 exercises for teens to build their self-esteem in healthy ways would be a great point to start from. The book shared some tips on being assertive, ending negative self-talk, and dealing with feelings like guilt and shame. Many of the topics, though, could have been expanded on and I thought there were some important topics that were missing altogether. The book as a whole came off as one-dimensional and could have been a lot more. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
