It's not a riveting novel, but it tells interesting facts and stories about Westward Expansion. It does not go deep, and the perspective of the American Indian is missing. The writing has content for upper elementary and middle school, but is written in simple sentences. This would be a great book for a struggling reader to practice non-fiction comprehension.
