The zombie apocalypse didn't happen overnight. It happened over the course of several weeks. America was so wrapped up in what the media fed them that they were oblivious until it was too late. When society crumbled and the Dead walked the planet, resources became scarce causing strangers to become friends, neighbors to become family and some of the closest people to become enemies. Communities fortified their defenses, not only against the threat of the undead but the greed and jealousy of the living. When the Dead Rise follows several groups from the intial Outbreak through beyond.
Seriously. Did ANYONE proofread this? There are so many errors that I about gave up on it several times. I am tenacious though and will see it through to the end. The writing isn't great and, like I said, there are more errors than I've ever seen before but I don't hate it.
I enjoy any book that can keep me on the edge of my seat and therefore can’t get enough of zombie books. I was really excited to read this book but it left me unsatisfied; with too many questions about the characters at the end.
There was confusion as it went from a group of characters in one chapter and then another group of characters in the next. I kept anticipating that at some point they wound end up together or it would get tied in somehow but never did. By the end of the book, I just felt let down.
Chapter 42 and chapter 48 both had some pretty obvious typos. In chapter 48 the character was wondering if the zombie still “had a soup”; which I am pretty sure he meant soul. THIS IS QUITE OBVIOUS EDITORS!
The book had no build up to get you on the edge of your seat. There were times it was close but never quite made it.
I’m sure the vagueness if what happened to the characters was for a second book but as I didn’t really get attached to any of the characters and the book didn’t keep me on edge, I’ll probably forgo any sequel. I do suggest however that some one else edits the second book.
Not bad, not bad at all. I've read some truly terrible zombie books and this is not like any of those at all.
There is however still a lot about this that needs some work. The main thing it lacks is editing. There's inconsistencies in characters that's annoying and it needs to be weaved together a bit more since now it's almost like different books for different characters.
There are some typo's that should have been picked up and some pacing wackyness but the story itself isn't bad at all and I do like some characters. A solid effort and I'd like to know what happens to the characters after this.
This first book sets up the events and introduced the main characters in their various settings. This is a very well written story. It has some interesting variations on the whole zombie theme. The characters are well drawn. The settings and circumstances for each character group dems to be pointing to conveying paths. I was totally drawn in to the story. In a genre where different, fresh, and intriguing is hard to come by, this book has it all. D.K. Fraser has done a great job!
I’m not a fan of short stories that lead into a series but this book was a good beginning to what I hope is going to be a good series. The characters come to life making want to cheer them on as they figure out how to find safety and deal with the unknown. This is not a how to guide but the story of several characters during the beginning of a virus outbreak that turns people into zombies while the government denies everything and appears to disappear. I look forward to the next book.
Good read, needs editing but good horror story give it a try.
Very good read. I believe thus is his first book and yes there are many errors, but the story was excellent. Many characters with good back story and actual horror in places, which is rare in these kinds of books. Read it you will like it and the author will get morr experience to make even better books. I will read what comes next.
A good read. A shame it's ended as i was enjoying out very much. Only thing wrong that i noticed was that some words we spelled incorrectly and some of the sentences didn't make sense as they went written right. Otherwise I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.
I think the story had promise, but the grammar errors just made it so hard to read. My favorite is the Zombie staked out as an early warning and the character said Does he have a soup? Think soul was the right word. Fire your editor and hire someone competent. Can't recommend.
The story captured my attention right away. Full of action. My only complaint is multiple typos. As if the author was typing without reading and letting spell correct suggestions stay in place. Looking forward to the next book. I hope it is edited more carefully.
The book really grabbed my attention and has great promise however, as others mentioned the grammatical errors and sentence structure is overwhelming. I wanted to finish the story (stopped at 4) but found myself mentally rewriting each chapter. I suggest a “redo” and/or editors review. I would really love to finish the book.
I just couldn’t get past the proofreading and formatting issues. I completely understand that some creep in from time to time, but the issues are so glaring that it’s almost as if they didn’t care to even try to fix the mistakes.
A few grammatical errors but overall a good book. The author creates a solid backstory for the characters that turns them into complex people, the type you love to follow.
I liked that this book has a variety of characters from a wide range of areas. Sometimes they are a little tough to keep track of, but once you become invested in them you can't stop reading up on what happens to them next.
I had to stop reading this book about halfway through it. There were so many typos and syntax errors, I lost the story. If it is cleaned up, I'm sure it be worth trying to read again.
I was lucky enough to help edit this book. I really enjoyed the storyline as well as the characters. Well done and I look forward to reading more of this series. Fingers crossed I get to help out again! The author is very nice as well!
The novel really conveys the chaotic nature of survival in an apocalyptic survival situation. It was heartwarming to see strangers forming bonds and dealing with confusion as best they were able in a terrible situation. Ok there’s a few typos but please remember it is written in US grammar :)
I NEED The next moment. This Kid(/a.k.a. grown man) is a badass. The fact he's Scottish and can barely speak English! Seriously... Amazing book. Exceptional writing! Good Douglas!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This would be at least a four star book if it weren't for the serious need for editing. It became hard to concentrate on what was happening due to that.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, especially the focus on the characters. I definitely recommend it. However, there are a lot of spelling and grammar issues .
