Why 5 stars? The level of the writing and the freshness of the telling of a story is amazing. This book written practically 90 years ago has frank appraisal of people and their dispositions.
In this book, a woman of a prominent small town family goes missing. All aspects appear suspicious- did she do it on purpose, did she run off with another, has she been abducted and sold, was she murdered?
The lead detective in this story is a reporter with roots to NYC but has moved so a smaller town outside. So he has the ability to move around and make connections quickly. The not finding a body, but having some many other physical clues is what actually creates a climate where the search for her won’t go away. The reporter, who was very fond of Christine, but did no more than be her friend- knew her best. And as the layers of other people who surrounded her fall away, there are even more reasons to keep suspicions high.
I like the fact that this story has a number of characters in play, but you never lose track of who is who and when they pop into view they are memorable and you’re able to try and discover if she was killed and if so - by whom?
Another aspect of this case which makes it tricky is that you aren’t sure if it was greed that was involved either. She had access to money, but if so why no ransom call?
This author also writes under the name William Morton, and the two stories feel completely different but have an eye for detail that really stands out. I don’t know if you can find this but if you do- snatch it up and read it.
