I read this book (the first one in a series) when I was younger (late teens) and promptly decided that I must have my own set. I considered it well-written back then, and it's still a good read today, rich in family life and set in the early days of British settlement in New Zealand.
Written in the 1930's, this stands up rather well, though there's some unfortunate use of racist language, and Māori are largely invisible. But its an OK family drama, and once you get used to the author's stance of basically telling a family history from the top down (rather than from the POV of any particular character), its an easy enough read.
