Good Skiffs: How They're Designed and Built

Rate this book
There is no more affordable, easily built, or utilitarian boat than the flat-bottom skiff. This profile of the skiff offers a look at its many varieties, including rowing skiffs, sailing skiffs, and skiffs designed for outboard power, as well as those suitable for use as yacht tenders, for fishing, for exploring, and for along-shore cruising. Beginning with a historical overview of the skiff, this book presents 17 specific skiffs by designers from Oregon to Cape Cod and includes techniques for building a skiff using a simple stitch-and-glue method.

This book is a great example of boat porn. It is written by a guy that spent more then 20 Years using, studying and think about skiffs. His 'reviews' of skiffs includes many of the original article too. He also built some of the skiffs reviewed. He includes plans and instructions for a stitch and glue skiff of his own design.
Think of it as a sailing trip with a continual discussion of the perfect skiff. The side track: There is no such thing as a 'perfect' skiff for all situations is included too. This book will make you want to build a skiff.

As a novice, I found a lot of good information here. A lot of choices and comparisons to be considered, even if your not convinced to try building a boat yourself it's a worthwhile read. There's also good resource materials to be gleaned for further consideration.
