The 20-year struggle by Dr. Robert Hubbard and Jim Downing to gain universal acceptance for their life-saving HANS Device—now in use by over 275,000 competitors worldwide—is an amazing tale of family, genius, perseverance, tragedy and triumph. It tells how the world’s leading auto racing series shouldered the task of saving their driving heroes—and a sport.
A great read for those interested in racing and racing safety. Crash! tells the dramatic story of how driver Jim Downing and his brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Hubbard, shaken by tragic racing deaths due to basal skull fractures, developed the first head and neck restraint. That’s only the beginning of the HANS story. They face a surprisingly uphill battle to persuade drivers to wear the device, finally succeeding after an investigation into the death of Dale Earnhardt provides convincing evidence a HANS could have saved his life.
Generally the content is good, but the structure is a bit exhausting. Some of the book is organized by calendar (timeline), some by sanctioning body, and even some by individual.
