This story is great for ages four and up and can be described as realistic fiction, fable/folktales, and drama. In regards to quality this book is interesting to children throughout the text, uses speech that accurately represents a culture and oral traditions, and included realistic, convincing characters. All children who begin elementary school have experienced a first day. So, this story is very relatable to children of all ages. The nervous feeling from being the new student and getting used to a place and people so unfamiliar are common processes for first days of school. Each student will have their own personal experience, however the comparisons of making new friends and learning new routines will be reflective of this story as well. This story compares to my text set in a few ways such as, the feeling immigrants may have when coming to a new school and starting their first day as well as the better days to follow once self-acceptance is achieved.
