A fascinating collection of ghost lore from the last half of the 19th century, most of which may have been familiar to James, and influenced The Turn Of The Screw.

I really like the case histories he lists from British paranormal investigation societies. Even if the stories aren't all strictly plausible, they're fascinating glimpses into English Victorian private life and I think they're very useful in his analysis of James' ghosts.
