In this new volume of adventures for Brenda and Effie we do battle with vampires and mummies and haunted cats! We uncover the mystery of both Elephant Men and meet Tolstoy the Long-Eared Bat out of Hell! Brenda also gets to go back to her roots with Baron Frankenstein, and we even share an investigation at the Christmas Hotel with the famous Sherlock Holmes. Whitby has never felt so hectic, and everyone here is very glad to welcome you back..!
A wonderful return visit to Whitby and our friends Brenda and Effie! Although it has been eight years since the last book (which I'm sure many of us thought was 'the last book'), 'A Game of Crones' did not disappoint. Sometimes you wish a beloved series would continue and when it does it's just not as good as you remember, but this is a brilliant book in its own right. As always it's a skillful blending of magic, mystery, suspense, friendship, comedy and warm-heartedness. I particularly enjoyed the stories 'Bat out of Hull' and 'The Woolworth Horror' (where we're given an up-date on Whitby's infamous branch of Woolies), though really they are all excellent. I only hope more readers discover this series and these enchanting characters. Thank-you Mr. Magrs for this lovely new (and unexpected) addition to my bookshelves!
I waited with eager anticipation for the next Brenda and Effie adventure and when I finally sat down with it I was excited. There are very few books that make me smile when I think about reading them and the Brenda and Effie novels always do. I was not disappointed! The characters and storyline were brilliant. I loved the humour and one liners the characters came out with. And more than anything, I love how it transports me to one of my favourite places on earth, which at this current time, is a tonic in itself! With these stories I always feel like I’ve been invited along for the ride, invited to join the danger and adventure and most importantly, invited to eat fresh fish and chips from ‘Cod Almighty’. And for that I feel very lucky. Would recommend these books to everyone. #paulmagrs #brendaandeffierule
First a little niggle in that not all Woolworths are closed. Send Brenda to Australia if you doubt me. But so good to have Brenda and Effie back, such a joy in these lockdown blues. Eight years has been too long so please more more more. Second niggle, why is the best line wasted on a cut away scene. “You’ve got a what? A....a bazooka! And a hidden supply of ...rock buns..?” Oh I love these books.

This is the first by this author in this series I have read for quite sometime. Its made up of separate adventures rather than one long story. Nice story of when the ladies first meet. I will certainly be reading more.
